Your Fault, Mercedes Ron: Diving into the Abyss of a Wattpad Sensation Gone Wrong

I never thought I’d find myself continuing with one of the most ridiculously bad Young Adult books from the Wattpad universe that I’ve ever encountered. Yet, here I am, after rereading one of my supposedly “favorite” series and devouring three thousand pages of fantasy and bloodshed, I was desperate enough to throw myself into the arms of Mercedes Ron for a second round. No one forced me to read this; it’s funny how easily I forgot the first book, and if it weren’t for my blog review, I’d be completely lost in the story… it took me a while to remember that Noah was the girl. That should tell you everything! Throughout this reading experience, I mentally face-palmed myself multiple times for accepting this challenge again, but who am I kidding? My masochistic side made me suffer through this aberration, and like the Anastasia Steele of book reviews, bring on the torture 😆.

At first glance, I saw the same brown sludge from the first book 💩: a common girl who rejects her new millionaire lifestyle, only now she keeps her rejection to herself. Therefore, she doesn’t complain if her mom throws her a mega-wow birthday party or if they gift her a “fucking Audi” as a graduation present (her words, not mine). And don’t even try to guess the color! IT’S RED. Yep, submissive red. 😒😒😒 It strikes me as incredibly odd that her stepfather agrees to buy his stepdaughter (after knowing her for a year) a new car (an AUDI, please), with his lawyer salary. How successful does he have to be to gift a girl who months ago was grumbling about her social status a car worth as much as a house? The imagination of teenagers on Wattpad soars like Buzz Lightyear. 🚀 I know, I know, the voices in my head don’t need to repeat it to me over and over – it’s just a teen novel, simple fiction. What amazes me is how far an author’s mind can wander to forget these details. Not to mention the lack of originality with the brand and color. So FSOG it hurts. 🙈

Regarding the characters, Noah remains the same loser as always: she tries to make the reader believe (as if we’re idiots) that this high school year was the best of her life. Could someone please remind her that her Canadian boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend, that her mother pushed her into a life she didn’t want just for a man, that her stepbrother brought out the worst in her and dragged her into a dark, illegal, and dangerous world, and not only that, but her father followed her, threatened her, and tried to kill her? And I think I’m still missing things, but that’s the most relevant stuff to confirm her idiocy. 😑

Point against it (despite starting with ten tons of negative points held up in customs): The name of one of the characters changes from Luca to Luka. Original book from a publishing house. HUGE ERROR. 🚨🚨🚨

What bothers me about this book is the publicity it received and the money invested in a story that isn’t worth it. I believe in these cases, there should be consideration to sell the book cheaper… and I’m not referring to the physical copy, but in ebook format. Look up the price on Amazon or other sales sites, the price they demand is incredible! These are Wattpad stories with plot holes, errors, and gaps; they can’t demand such a high price when it’s clear the editor did little to nothing. Every time I hear about the existence of these books, I remember those that, for whatever reason, are withdrawn from the market or discontinued, leaving the reader hanging just because they didn’t have enough sales. Hello Maeva with the Mara Dyer issue! 😒😒😒

It really annoys me when so much attention is given to these types of stories that only stand out on the platform for their number of readers, not for having a solid story that blows your mind. Because I know there must be some hidden gems on Wattpad that are overlooked, and they give space to these monstrosities. Not to mention books by Youtubers and other garbage that are an abomination in the literary world.

The world would be a better place if publishers completed unfinished series/trilogies.

Dreaming is free!

Returning to the characters, our unisex-named idiot has the crazy idea of a possessive, sick, and vomit-inducing love as his ideal. Nick practices it with total naturalness in the best “Mine or no one’s” style. Someone who doesn’t allow their partner to go on a trip with their family so they stay with him is not right in the head! 🐤🐥🐤🐥🐤

And as the family is a walking joke, Noah’s mom has the nerve to pull out the “struggling mother” act (after forcing her to move and pressuring her to be glued to Nick), she realizes her daughter is dating a troubled guy and pretends to warn her about his dangerousness. She threw her into the lion’s den and now pretends to save her. The best mom in the whole wide world.

On the other hand, we have Nick’s unbearable, abandoning mother who blackmails Noah into doing her a favor to help her meet up with her son. Of course, Noah falls into her sculpted claws because she has no choice but to be the typical brainless protagonist (even knowing that it would be taken as betrayal and blah blah). If we add the fact that Nicholas has an internal conflict the size of Russia with the parental issue, as soon as it came to light, my prediction was correct, and the most obvious drama in the universe of obviousness emerged. And they present it as so apocalyptic…

Honestly, I can’t get used to the modus operandi of Wattpad in a book. It’s assumed that stories on the platform usually have a basic direction like most stories (beginning, middle, end), but I struggle to get used to the mini-stories that appear within the same book, for example:

Noah was alone at home, and Nicholas decides to visit her. When he arrives (and I clarify just in case, the parents left without giving her basic warnings), he finds the house dark and thinks the power went out due to the weather. He enters and wakes up the naive Noah, and minutes later, they hear noises downstairs. They were thieves. The first thing Nick manages to ask is if she set the alarm in the house… AND I ASK MYSELF: HOW THE HELL DIDN’T HE REALIZE UPON ENTERING THE HOUSE THAT THE ALARM WASN’T ACTIVATED???? The funniest thing is that Noah feels stupid for not knowing about the device and doesn’t notice the idiotic question she was just asked. Shortening the unnecessary and ridiculous drama, they manage to catch the crooks, and the mother feels grateful to Nick, changing her opinion about his behavior. FACE PALM. My problem is this: with that idea, she could have executed a better ending for that chapter or redirected the story… gotten something out of it somehow, but she preferred to keep it to a minimum and miss the opportunity. Was I expecting Nick to show his claws and do something about it, at least put his life in danger for his love and end up in the emergency room like any ridiculous teen novel? Yes, and when it all ended in nothing, I felt even more disappointed. Everything died there and was never mentioned again. She used that mini-story that didn’t fit at all to make Noah’s mother see Nick in a different light, and the maternal drama was left in the past. End. Terrible.

Some notable quotes:

Noah, I can’t stand people thinking you’re not mine.

“Now you’re going to do everything I tell you, Noah. I’m very serious,” he snapped, radiating rage from every pore of his skin. “If it weren’t for your bullshit trauma, I’d leave you here so you could learn once and for all not to meddle in my fucking business.”

“If you’re with me, I want you to be with me and no one else.” Her eyes widened in surprise. “Is that why you want me at your house?” she asked incredulously, raising her voice and matching mine. “So you can watch me? What kind of fucked up relationship is that, Nicholas?!”

“Let go of me!” I yelled, but that only made him hold me tighter. “Damn it, Noah, I would never cheat on you!” He shook me hard, and my eyes lifted from the muddy, wet ground to pay him a little attention. “It was just a stupid kiss, a stupid kiss I gave her out of rage, because I was pissed off at you, and yes, I was an asshole because I took advantage of your jealousy towards Sophia to get revenge on you. But in reality, I don’t want to get revenge on you, Noah, I got carried away by that Nicholas from years ago, that person you’ve helped me leave behind, and I swear to God I will never allow him to reappear, it was the worst mistake I’ve ever made in my life.”

I won’t continue to traumatize you; I could go on for hours recounting every terrible part. This repeats itself for four hundred and fifty pages of the same thing. And the worst part? I also read the third book just out of curiosity. I know no one is going to give me back what I lost with this trilogy, and that I could have avoided doing it, even writing this review, but somehow, I feel the need to find a Wattpad author who is actually worthwhile, and while I keep searching for the one worthy of my praise, I’m going to continue unloading all the thoughts that come to mind here, I’ve said my piece.
