SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 21, 2022) – The highly anticipated all-new Toyota Sequoia has officially started production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (Toyota Texas), marking a significant step for the iconic SUV and Toyota’s commitment to hybrid technology. This next-generation Toyota Sequoia, born and built in Texas, embraces a revolutionary all-hybrid powertrain, promising drivers exceptional power and enhanced fuel efficiency.
Kevin Voelkel, president of Toyota Texas, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “The third-generation Toyota Sequoia represents a new era in electrified vehicles, bringing us closer to carbon neutrality while exceeding customer expectations for this legendary SUV.” He further added, “Our team members are incredibly proud to integrate the Toyota Sequoia into our Texas production lineup, embracing new challenges as we deliver vehicles that resonate with our customers’ desires and lifestyles.”
Toyota Sequoia Finds its Exclusive Texas Home
Toyota’s $391 million investment in Toyota Texas back in 2019 laid the groundwork for making Texas the sole production hub for both the all-new Toyota Tundra and now the Toyota Sequoia. This move signifies a new chapter in advanced automotive manufacturing at the San Antonio plant. Over 3,800 Toyota employees and 5,300 on-site suppliers dedicated countless hours preparing for the Toyota Sequoia’s debut. The production line incorporates cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, including innovative laser welding and an upgraded process to handle the largest single piece of metal ever stamped by Toyota.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is poised to redefine the large-size SUV segment. It boasts a striking new design, premium comfort, advanced technology, and a seamless blend of robust performance and improved fuel economy thanks to its hybrid system. Built upon Toyota’s renowned legacy of quality, durability, and reliability, this three-row SUV is set to make a significant impact when it arrives at dealerships next month. Notably, the Toyota Sequoia launches with the Capstone grade, a suite of exclusive premium features specifically for vehicles manufactured at Toyota Texas, highlighting the plant’s advanced capabilities.
Strengthening Roots in San Antonio
To celebrate the Toyota Sequoia’s production commencement in San Antonio, Toyota Texas demonstrated its commitment to the local community by donating a total of $100,000 to the San Antonio River Foundation and the San Antonio Parks Foundation. These contributions will bolster tree planting and conservation efforts, along with environmental stewardship programs in San Antonio’s south side, reinforcing Toyota’s dedication to environmental responsibility within its manufacturing communities.
Toyota’s total investment in San Antonio now exceeds $3.1 billion, underscoring its long-term commitment to the region.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are genuinely thrilled that the new Toyota Sequoia is being manufactured right here in San Antonio at Toyota’s modernized facility. This is yet another significant milestone, showcasing Toyota’s strong faith in our city and workforce.”
Judge Wolff added, “I was fortunate to be involved when Toyota decided to establish operations in San Antonio in 2002. For nearly two decades, they have been an exemplary corporate citizen. Together with their supply partners, they have generated over 7,000 jobs for Bexar County residents. We are excited to celebrate the local production of the all-new, all-hybrid Toyota Sequoia.”
