If you’re experiencing frustrating issues with your Tacoma’s transmission, like delayed shifting, gear hunting, or reluctance to use higher gears, you’re not alone. Many Tacoma owners have reported similar problems, particularly with models equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission. Before you consider expensive repairs or aftermarket tunes, there’s a simple yet often overlooked solution: checking your transmission fluid level. You might be surprised to find it’s underfilled from the factory.

One Tacoma owner of a 2017 TRD Off-Road model with 100,000 miles, a 2-inch lift, and 285/70 R17 tires, shared their experience with a common Tacoma Transmission issue. For years, their truck exhibited typical symptoms: downshifting too early, holding lower gears for extended periods on inclines, struggling to find the right gear (“gear hunting”), rarely using 6th gear, sluggish response, and inconsistent torque converter lockup behavior. While acknowledging that aftermarket “tunes” are often suggested as a fix, they were hesitant to modify their vehicle’s software.
Seeking a less invasive solution, they decided to perform a transmission drain and fill, following a widely available online video tutorial. During the process, they discovered a significant deficiency in the transmission fluid level. Upon draining, only 2 quarts of fluid were removed. After refilling with 3.5 quarts and performing the temperature check and level adjustment, very little fluid drained out, indicating the transmission was approximately 1.5 quarts low. This discovery aligns with reports from various online forums suggesting that underfilled transmissions are surprisingly common in Tacomas, even in newer models with fewer miles.
The impact of this simple fluid adjustment was transformative. Following the drain and fill, the Tacoma owner embarked on a road trip through diverse driving conditions, including hills, flat stretches, and winding roads. The results were remarkable. The transmission behavior shifted dramatically towards “normal,” as they described it, noting a significant improvement compared to the previous four years of ownership.
Key improvements observed included:
- Improved Gear Holding on Inclines: The transmission held 4th gear longer when ascending hills, avoiding unnecessary downshifts. On a stretch of I-80, it even refrained from downshifting to 3rd gear.
- Increased 6th Gear Usage: Sixth gear engagement became much more frequent on flat roads, leading to improved fuel economy. The owner reported achieving 20 MPG on a leg of their trip where 6th gear was consistently utilized.
- Enhanced Sport Mode Performance: In “sport mode” and with “ECT” activated, shifting became faster, firmer, and more responsive. The engine held higher RPMs, providing quicker access to power.
- Better Performance on Mountain Passes: On challenging uphill stretches like the Bishop to Tom’s Place grade (10+ miles of steep incline), the truck maintained 70 mph in 4th gear. On Deadman Summit, while it briefly shifted to 3rd, it quickly upshifted as the grade lessened, a significant improvement over previous experiences. Conway Summit, a notoriously steep pass, saw a similar improvement, with the transmission shifting down from 4th gear only briefly before returning to 4th, a behavior never before observed on this particular hill.
Overall fuel economy for the trip averaged around 18 MPG, accompanied by the elimination of gear hunting and prolonged lower gear holding. The torque converter lockup also felt more positive and effective.
Based on this experience, the Tacoma owner strongly recommends performing a transmission drain and fill as a potential solution for those dissatisfied with their Tacoma transmission’s performance. They concluded that, for them, this simple fluid adjustment eliminated the perceived need for an aftermarket tune.
If you are experiencing similar transmission issues with your Tacoma, checking and adjusting your transmission fluid level might be a worthwhile first step. It’s a relatively straightforward procedure that could potentially resolve many common complaints and significantly improve your driving experience.
