Chef Arno’s remarkable culinary journey began in his native Germany, where his passion for cooking ignited at a young age. His formal apprenticeship commenced in Stuttgart, at the renowned French Restaurant Soerenberg. After four years of dedicated study and hands-on kitchen experience, Arno’s career took him to Rudesheim, nestled along the picturesque Rhine River. There, he honed his skills as Commis de Cuisine at the upscale Hotel Traube, further refining his expertise in classic European cuisine. His pursuit of culinary excellence then led him to Hamburg, where he served as Commis De Cuisine at Hotel St. Raphael and later as Chef de Cuisine at Borchers Restaurant, solidifying his reputation within Germany’s fine dining scene.
In 1994, Chef Arno’s adventurous spirit brought him to Oaxaca, Mexico, where he embraced the vibrant flavors of Latin America as Sous Chef at the Hotel Victoria. Two years later, California beckoned, and he accepted a unique position as Personal Chef for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. This role allowed him to traverse the diverse culinary landscapes of the United States, from the Creole spices of New Orleans to the Latin-infused tastes of Miami, the fresh Californian cuisine of Los Angeles, the hearty flavors of Utah, and the vibrant dining scene of Orlando. These rich experiences across Mexico and the US infused a unique multicultural flair into Chef Arno’s culinary style. Eventually, he settled in Oakland, California, and contributed his expertise as Chef de Partie at the Waterfront Plaza Hotel in Jack London Square, further establishing his presence in the Bay Area’s culinary community.
The year 2005 marked a pivotal moment when Chef Arno partnered with Gregory Heynes and Carlos Rangel to take the helm of Shelby’s Restaurant in Orinda, CA. Under their leadership, Shelby’s quickly evolved into a celebrated dining destination, renowned for Chef Arno’s innovative and compelling cuisine. Shelby’s menu is a delightful fusion of his extensive culinary background, showcasing French, German, Californian, and Italian influences, all presented within a casually elegant and inviting setting.
