The United States Postal Service (USPS) is showcasing its commitment to modernization and sustainability with the rollout of its new Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV), including cutting-edge New Us Postal Trucks. These vehicles, now prominently displayed at USPS headquarters in L’Enfant Plaza, Washington D.C., represent a significant leap forward in the Postal Service’s ambitious fleet replacement initiative, the largest in decades.
Already in service across various locations nationwide, these new us postal trucks are transforming mail and package delivery operations. A Continued Commitment to Fleet Modernization
Fleet modernization remains a central tenet of the Delivering for America plan. From the outset, USPS committed to procuring the most environmentally sustainable vehicles possible for its entire fleet, balancing environmental responsibility with financial and operational realities. The understanding has always been that the pace of electrification and the delivery schedule for the new fleet would remain adaptable, responding to factors such as further vehicle acquisitions, the Postal Service’s improving financial standing, and the evolving operational landscape.
In a significant step in December 2022, USPS announced its intention to acquire 106,000 new vehicles, with a commitment to at least 66,000 being battery electric delivery vehicles. This commitment includes 45,000 electric NGDVs and an additional 21,000 commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) battery electric vehicles. Following this, in February 2023, the Postal Service placed its initial order for 9,250 electric COTS vehicles, alongside an investment in over 14,000 electric vehicle charging stations to support the growing electric fleet.
In total, the Postal Service is investing $9.6 billion in this comprehensive vehicle modernization initiative. The strategic deployment of these new us postal trucks will continue over the next five years, prioritizing areas based on delivery volume, existing infrastructure readiness, and specific operational needs.
