The All-New 2025 Toyota 4Runner: Reaching New Heights in Off-Road Prowess and Refinement

For four decades, the 4Runner name has been synonymous with rugged dependability and off-road mastery. The New Four Runner, the all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner, builds upon this legendary foundation, delivering an unparalleled blend of capability, modern technology, and premium comfort. This sixth-generation icon is poised to redefine the off-road SUV segment, offering enthusiasts and adventurers a gateway to explore beyond the paved path. Arriving in the U.S. at the end of 2024, the 2025 4Runner, crafted in Toyota’s Tahara plant in Japan, is not just an evolution—it’s a revolution.

Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, aptly summarizes the significance of this launch: “This all-new 4Runner has incredible versatility and capability that nicely rounds out our truck family story. We’ve sold over 3 million in the 40 years it has been on sale, and this sixth-generation model offers a cool new look and incredible features, yet retains the rugged style and capability our customers love about this icon of adventure.”

Built on a Foundation of Strength: The TNGA-F Platform

The new four runner is engineered from the ground up on Toyota’s robust TNGA-F global truck platform. This formidable architecture, shared with the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia, utilizes a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame. This backbone is complemented by a sophisticated multi-link coil rear suspension and double wishbone front suspension system, ensuring both rugged off-road performance and refined on-road manners.

The TNGA-F platform not only enhances the 4Runner’s inherent strength and durability but also significantly improves ride comfort and handling. Passengers will appreciate the smoother ride, even in the available third-row seating. Furthermore, this enhanced frame, combined with the potent i-FORCE MAX powertrain, empowers the new four runner with a substantial towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, making it ready for any adventure, gear in tow.

Design Evolution: Honoring Heritage, Embracing the Future

The design philosophy behind the new four runner is a masterful blend of honoring its iconic past while boldly stepping into the future. Kevin Hunter, President of Calty, explains the design inspiration: “Designing the legendary 4Runner began with identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation. Inspired by Baja desert racing, the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runner’s go anywhere purpose”.

Calty, Toyota’s Michigan-based design team, spearheaded the aesthetic evolution of the new four runner. Drawing inspiration from desert racing, the design language is shared with the Tacoma, forging a family resemblance while maintaining the 4Runner’s distinct identity. A notable nod to the first and second generation models is the return of the legacy “wrap over” quarter glass, seamlessly integrated into the modern design. And, staying true to its DNA, the beloved roll-down rear window remains a signature feature.

Inside, the design team prioritized ease of operation and a functional interface, striking a balance between modern sophistication and rugged authenticity. Second-row tumble seats amplify the interior versatility, maximizing cargo space and adaptability for both passenger comfort and gear hauling.

Powering the Adventure: i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX Powertrains

The new four runner offers a choice of two advanced and efficient turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder powertrains. The standard i-FORCE engine delivers a robust 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine will power the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited grades.

For those seeking even greater power and enhanced efficiency, the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is available on TRD Off-Road and Limited models, and standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum grades. This hybrid system pairs the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, drawing power from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack. The result is a combined system output of up to 326 horsepower and a staggering 465 lb.-ft. of torque – the most potent powertrain ever offered in a 4Runner, ensuring exhilarating performance both on and off the road.

Trail Ready from the Factory: Enhanced Off-Road Capabilities

The 4Runner legacy is intrinsically linked to off-road prowess, and the new four runner elevates this reputation even further. A newly available Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism enhances suspension articulation with a simple push of a button. This feature allows for greater wheel travel, maximizing tire contact with uneven terrain for superior traction. The 2025 4Runner boasts impressive approach and departure angles, with up to 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles, allowing it to confidently tackle challenging obstacles. The available Multi-Terrain Monitor system further aids drivers by providing real-time views of potential hazards on the center display.

Drivetrain options include 2WD, part-time 4WD, or full-time 4WD. 2WD models feature an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD), while 4WD models are equipped with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and Auto LSD. An electronic locking rear differential comes standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades. The Limited grade offers an available full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models, which is standard on the Platinum grade.

The Multi-Terrain Select system now operates in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, offering customizable settings for various terrains like Mud, Dirt, and Sand. The new four runner also incorporates the updated, quieter CRAWL Control function, acting as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing drivers to focus on navigating tricky trails. For extreme low-traction scenarios, the available electronically activated locking rear differential can distribute power 50/50 to the rear wheels for maximum grip. Downhill Assist Control is another valuable off-road feature, regulating vehicle speed during steep descents.

A 4Runner for Every Adventure: Diverse Grade Lineup

Expanding its appeal to a wider range of customers, the new four runner offers an unprecedented nine grades: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

The Trailhunter grade is a standout addition, designed as a factory-developed overlanding rig. An 8-inch or available 14-inch multimedia touchscreen houses Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, developed by Toyota’s Texas-based Connected Technologies team. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, along with an available Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output, ensure seamless smartphone integration. Multiple USB-C ports provide ample charging options for front and rear passengers. A 7-inch gauge cluster is standard on lower grades, while a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is featured on higher trims.

Smart Key System with push-button start is standard across all grades. Select grades offer an available Digital Key via an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, enabling vehicle entry and start-up using compatible smartphones. This digital key can also be shared remotely, offering enhanced vehicle access management.

A Rugged Lineup, Redefined

The new four runner perfectly complements Toyota’s robust lineup of body-on-frame vehicles. Joining the full-size Tundra, the iconic Land Cruiser, and the Tacoma, the 2025 4Runner provides customers with an expanded range of rugged and capable trucks to suit diverse lifestyles and adventures. These vehicles are engineered to conquer challenging terrains and empower owners to explore the world with confidence.
