The Shelby GT500 CODE RED represents the zenith of Shelby Mustang performance, born from an experimental project in 2008 and fueled by customer demand for unparalleled power. This limited-edition marvel takes the already impressive GT500 to stratospheric levels with a hand-built twin-turbocharged V8 engine, unleashing up to 1,300 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Beyond just raw power, the CODE RED package encompasses comprehensive upgrades to the suspension, cooling, and aesthetics, creating a truly unique and formidable machine. Production is strictly limited to just 30 units, with only 10 GT500s from each of the 2020-2022 model years being transformed into this ultimate Shelby Mustang.
Shelby American has a rich history of pushing boundaries, often through experimental vehicles. The CODE RED marks a significant moment as it transitions from an experimental concept to a production reality. Shelby’s legacy is dotted with iconic “EXP” models like the Green Hornet, Little Red, and the original 2008 twin-turbo CODE RED. These experimental cars served as testbeds for innovation. For example, the ’67 GT500 Super Snake boasted a 427 race engine, while the Green Hornet explored fuel injection and independent rear suspension in a ’68 hardtop. Little Red from 1967 featured twin superchargers and numerous other groundbreaking features.
The genesis of the CODE RED concept can be traced back to 2008 when Shelby American experimented with replacing the supercharger on a GT500 with twin turbos. This experimental 2008 CODE RED Shelby GT500, featuring a 5.4-liter V8 re-engineered by Nelson Racing Engines, incorporated a dual-feed fuel system capable of blending high-octane racing fuel as needed. Enhanced cooling systems were implemented to manage the increased heat, and AMS collaborated to develop a speed-sensitive boost controller. Extensive modifications to the drivetrain and numerous performance enhancements were also part of this experimental build. However, due to the high development costs and its extreme nature, the original CODE RED was not deemed suitable for production at that time.
For the production 2020-2022 CODE RED, Shelby collaborated closely with partners to engineer a package that is not only exceptionally powerful but also robust and reliable. The 5.2L engine now incorporates entirely new high-performance components, boosted by an intercooled premium twin-turbo system, a redesigned fuel system, and an advanced engine management system. On 93 octane pump gas, the CODE RED delivers over 1,000 horsepower and 780 lb-ft of torque. When fueled with E85 Ethanol, this figure can surge to an astounding 1,300 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.
The current generation GT500 CODE RED is a holistic transformation that extends far beyond just the powertrain. It includes a widebody package with distinctive wheels and tires, upgraded axles, refined suspension tuning, bespoke interior enhancements, unique badging, a carbon fiber hood, and more. Each Shelby GT500 Code Red owner receives a membership to Team Shelby, the global club established by Carroll Shelby in 2008, and their vehicle will be officially documented in the Shelby Registry. The package MSRP for the CODE RED transformation starts at $224,995, and this price is exclusive of the base car. Production is currently underway in Las Vegas, and owners of 2020-2022 model year Shelby GT500s interested in converting their vehicle into a CODE RED edition are encouraged to contact Shelby American for further details on transforming their Mustang GT500 into the ultimate Shelby experience.
