Remembering Mercedes Tyler: A Celebration of Life

Mercedes Rose Tyler, a vibrant 21-year-old from Edmond, Oklahoma, sadly passed away on January 1, 2020. Her life, though brief, was filled with remarkable achievements and a radiant personality that touched many. A Celebration of Life service to honor Mercedes Tyler will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 10, 2020, at the Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha, Kansas. In accordance with Mercedes’ wishes, cremation has taken place.

Born on December 9, 1998, in McAlester, Oklahoma, Mercedes Tyler was the cherished daughter of Freedom Anderson and Waylon Tyler. Even as a young child, Mercedes was known for her spirited nature, quick wit, and infectious grin. These qualities, combined with her intelligence and charisma, blossomed into the exceptional young woman everyone admired and loved. Mercedes embraced life with enthusiasm, participating in dance and actively engaging in the Neodesha Girl Scouts, where she dedicated numerous hours to community service. Fond memories of family vacations, joyful slumber parties, and precious moments spent with family and friends will forever be treasured.

During her teenage years, Mercedes Tyler showcased her musical talents with the Union Marching Band through her junior year of high school. She excelled academically and musically, later focusing her studies towards her chosen college major. Mercedes graduated with honors from Union High School in 2017 and continued her academic journey at Oklahoma State University. There, she pursued her passion for helping others, concentrating her studies in Human Development and Family Sciences with a specialization in Child and Family Services. Mercedes’s compassionate nature extended to animals; she lovingly adopted two cats, Jinx and Jasper, from a local animal shelter. This nurturing spirit also led her to frequently nanny for close friends and family, demonstrating her sincere kindness and affection for those around her. Since May 2018, Mercedes was a valued employee of Brightway Community Living, an agency supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Oklahoma City area.

Mercedes Tyler was truly extraordinary – intelligent, ambitious, and outgoing, with a smile and laugh that could brighten even the darkest days. Her luminous personality naturally drew people to her, and she effortlessly made friends, leaving a positive impression on everyone she met. Mercedes will be remembered as the embodiment of a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, and friend, as well as a compassionate humanitarian and genuinely amazing individual.

Mercedes was predeceased by her maternal Great-Grandmother, Mildred Welch, and paternal Grandmother, Darce Harris. She is lovingly survived by her Mother, Freedom Anderson; Father, Waylon Tyler, Stephanie Tyler; and her two younger brothers, Giovanni and Corey Tyler. Her maternal Grandparents, Terry & Carole Anderson; Great-Grandmother, Oneta Anderson; Aunt, Meagan Osborne; and Uncle, Jacob Anderson also survive her. In addition, she leaves behind paternal Uncles James Tyler and Chris Tyler, along with numerous cousins, family members, and extended family who will deeply miss her.

In lieu of floral tributes, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha, Kansas. Donations will be used for Mercedes Tyler’s headstone, and any remaining funds will be donated to the ASPCA in Mercedes’ honor, reflecting her love for animals.
