The Story Behind the Mercedes-Benz Symbol: More Than Just a Star

Like many, I recently discovered the fascinating story behind the Mercedes Symbol, and it’s a tale worth sharing. It all started with a personal note and a vision for the future of transportation.

The journey to the Mercedes-Benz star begins with Gottlieb Daimler, a pioneer of the automotive industry. Long before Mercedes-Benz was the global powerhouse we know today, Daimler was working at Deutz gas engine factory. In 1872, marking his personal aspirations, Daimler drew a star above his house on a picture postcard of Deutz in Cologne. He sent this postcard to his wife, with a prophetic message that this star would one day shine over his factory, symbolizing prosperity and success. Little did he know how true these words would become.

Years later, after Gottlieb Daimler’s passing, his sons Paul and Adolf Daimler were searching for a distinctive trademark for their automotive marque. Remembering their father’s symbolic star, they recognized its potential. In June 1909, the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) officially registered both a three-pointed and a four-pointed star as trademarks. While both were legally protected, the company favored the three-pointed design. By 1910, the three-dimensional Mercedes star began to adorn the radiators of their vehicles, marking the beginning of a legendary emblem.

But what does the three-pointed Mercedes symbol actually represent? It embodies Gottlieb Daimler’s ambitious vision of “universal motorization.” The three points of the star symbolize Daimler’s aspiration for his engines – and by extension, Mercedes-Benz vehicles – to power transportation on land, on water, and in the air. Over time, the Mercedes star logo has undergone subtle refinements. In 1916, a circle was added to encase the star, further solidifying its visual identity. This encircled star sometimes included four smaller stars and the word “Mercedes,” or the names of the DMG plants, Untertürkheim and Berlin-Marienfeld, reflecting the company’s growing operations. By 1923, the three-dimensional, three-pointed star within a circle became a legally registered trademark, cementing its place as the definitive Mercedes-Benz symbol.
