In 1933, Dr. Winter’s relocation to the United States marked a new chapter for chassis 36040. It is believed the car accompanied him, resurfacing in 1939 under the ownership of Mr. Charles Zumbach of New York City. Mr. Zumbach cherished the Roadster until 1950, after which it passed to a brewery owner in Connecticut. The car remained within the state, changing hands once more before entering a significant period of long-term ownership in 1955 with Mr. Edward Trager in Chicago. Mr. Trager lovingly preserved the SSK until 1979, when it was acquired by Mr. Skip Berg of Tiburon, California. A restoration of the body is believed to have been undertaken around 1983, ensuring its continued beauty.
After another ownership transition, this mercedes ssk became part of The Aumann Collection in December 1994. Described at the time as elegantly presented in black with a red leather interior, it was purchased for 565,000 Deutsche Mark. Further restoration efforts commenced in February of the following year, entrusted to MTK Automobile of Großmaischeid. Revitalized and ready for action, the SSK participated in the prestigious 1995 Mille Miglia Storica, a testament to its enduring appeal and historical significance.
