Is a New Mercedes S-Class Coupe on the Horizon? Trademark Filings Spark Rumors

Despite the automotive world’s increasing shift towards SUVs and the less favorable market for two-door cars, whispers of a potential new Mercedes S-Class Coupe are emerging. While Mercedes-Benz has streamlined its coupe offerings, discontinuing models like the SLC and S-Class Coupe/Convertible in favor of the CLE, recent trademark activity suggests that the dream of a grand, two-door Benz might not be entirely over. Could we see a resurgence of the iconic Mercedes S Coupe?

Intriguing trademark filings with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) have ignited speculation about a forthcoming large Mercedes coupe. Discovered by Car and Driver, these filings, submitted by Swiss firm Robu Aktiengesellschaft, reveal designs for two distinct models: one bearing the prestigious Maybach double M logo and the other hinting at a high-performance AMG variant. Notably, the Maybach design showcases a distinctive split rear window, reminiscent of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept, a design cue that blends opulence with unique styling.

However, the plot thickens as these trademarks weren’t directly filed by Mercedes-Benz. Robu Aktiengesellschaft, the company behind the filings, has a history of trademarking designs later associated with bespoke automotive projects. They were previously linked to the Bussink GT R SpeedLegend, a radical speedster conversion of the AMG GTR by HWA. This connection raises questions: Is Mercedes-Benz outsourcing the design or production of a niche model, or is a third party developing a coachbuilt Mercedes S Coupe?

The business case for a large luxury coupe in today’s market might seem challenging. Yet, the emergence of Mercedes-Benz’s Mythos series, dedicated to ultra-exclusive, limited-production vehicles, could provide a viable path. Following the lead of the AMG PureSpeed, a roofless and extravagantly priced SL63, a Mercedes S Coupe under the Mythos banner could cater to a select clientele seeking ultimate luxury and exclusivity. This approach would justify the development costs for a niche model and position the Mercedes S Coupe as a true collector’s item.

Adding further fuel to the fire, Spanish magazine Motor.es captured spy photographs last year of a camouflaged Mercedes coupe featuring a split rear window. This sighting aligns intriguingly with the design trademarks, suggesting that a prototype Mercedes S Coupe might indeed be under development, concealed beneath the disguise.

Whether conceived in-house by Mercedes-Benz or by a specialized third party, the signs point towards a potential revival of the Mercedes S Coupe. In an era dominated by SUVs, the allure of a grand, two-door coupe, especially one derived from the flagship S-Class, remains strong for discerning enthusiasts. Furthermore, a limited-edition Mercedes S Coupe could serve as a fitting farewell to the legendary V12 engine, as Mercedes transitions towards electric mobility. The prospect of a new Mercedes S Coupe, blending timeless elegance with modern luxury, is certainly an exciting possibility for the future of high-end automobiles.
