Mercedes R350: Is This Luxurious Family Vehicle the Right Choice for You?

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz R350 occupies a unique space in the automotive world. It’s often described as a minivan, but that label doesn’t quite capture its essence. This vehicle is undoubtedly designed to haul families, but it does so with a level of luxury and sophistication rarely found in traditional minivans. It aims to blend utility with the premium experience you expect from Mercedes-Benz. The updated front end styling moved away from the less appealing design of previous models, adopting a sharper, more contemporary appearance.

One of the strongest selling points of the Mercedes R350 is its capacity to transport multiple passengers in comfort and style. The model reviewed here was configured for six occupants with second-row captain’s chairs, though a seven-passenger option with a bench seat in the middle row was also available. Impressively, regardless of configuration, the R350 boasts four sets of LATCH connectors for child seats, highlighting its family-centric design. Accessing the rear seats is surprisingly convenient, even without sliding doors. Mercedes opted for large, traditionally hinged rear doors that open exceptionally wide. However, this design necessitates being mindful of parking spaces to avoid accidental door dings to neighboring vehicles.

While some might argue for the practicality of sliding doors on a vehicle of this type, their absence arguably contributes to the R350’s more upscale image, helping it steer clear of the typical minivan aesthetic. Imagine if Mercedes-Benz had incorporated power sliding doors – the R350 could have been crowned the ultimate in luxurious and spacious family transportation.

The interior of the R350 is designed with passenger enjoyment in mind, particularly for families. The second-row captain’s chairs create individual zones for each passenger, enhancing personal space and comfort. An entertainment system, complete with individual screens and wireless headsets, transforms long journeys, keeping rear occupants occupied and content. This feature proved to be a hit, even inspiring a nostalgic “drive-in movie” experience.

The dual moonroofs significantly brighten the cabin, extending a sense of spaciousness even to the third row. The light tan upholstery, contrasted with darker elements on the dashboard, console, and doors, further contributes to an airy and open feel. Practicality is addressed with numerous storage compartments, cubbies, and cupholders throughout the vehicle. Heated front seats add a touch of luxury for those in the front.

From a driving perspective, the Mercedes R350, with its considerable 203-inch length, naturally handles more like a larger vehicle. The V6 engine provides ample power, although it can feel slightly hesitant at times. Steering and braking are adequate. Despite its size, maneuvering the R350 in parking situations is surprisingly manageable. Initial concerns about parking difficulty due to its length were quickly dispelled as it proved to be quite graceful in and out of parking spaces.

A notable ergonomic quirk of the R350 is the placement of controls on the steering column. The cruise control stalk, turn signal, and gear selector are all located here, and their arrangement can be initially confusing. The turn signal, positioned around the 7 o’clock mark, is somewhat obscured by the steering wheel. Conversely, the cruise control stalk at the 10 o’clock position is very prominent, leading to frequent accidental cruise control activation when intending to signal. Adapting to this unconventional layout requires a period of adjustment.

The reviewed Mercedes R350, with its extensive options, carried a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $67,455. This premium price point includes a comprehensive list of features, such as the panoramic moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, premium sound system, parking assist (Parktronic), blind spot monitoring, and 20-inch wheels.

The base price for the R350 started at a more accessible $50,240, allowing buyers to customize features based on their budget. Ultimately, the Mercedes R350 caters to families who require substantial passenger space but desire a vehicle that transcends the traditional minivan image, offering a more luxurious and refined driving experience, provided the budget allows.

Verdict: Lease it.
