Mercedes GL Series 2017: Embracing the GLS Transformation – The S-Class of SUVs

Just as Mercedes-Benz refined its naming strategy, the mid-size M-Class evolved into the GLE. Following suit, the full-size GL-Class underwent a significant transformation for the 2017 model year, emerging as the Mercedes Gl Series 2017, now known as the GLS. This name change isn’t merely cosmetic; it signifies a strategic repositioning of this full-size SUV alongside the prestigious S-Class within the Mercedes-Benz family. Mercedes-Benz themselves proudly declares the GLS to be the “S-Class among SUVs,” highlighting its elevated status and premium aspirations.

The metamorphosis from GL-Class to Mercedes GL Series 2017 GLS is marked by substantial enhancements aimed at boosting efficiency, refining handling, and elevating overall driving dynamics. The capable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system remains a standard feature across the range. A significant upgrade is the introduction of the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission, equipping most models in the lineup. Notably, the high-performance Mercedes-AMG GLS63 retains its specially calibrated AMG Speedshift seven-speed automatic transmission, tailored for its performance-oriented nature. Drivers will also appreciate the expanded settings within the Dynamic Select vehicle dynamics system, allowing for a more customized driving experience. Furthermore, the Airmatic air suspension has been improved, and additional electronic driving aids have been incorporated to enhance safety and convenience.

Powering the Mercedes GL Series 2017 GLS range, the powertrain options largely mirror those of its predecessor, with subtle yet effective enhancements to power output. The entry point to the range is the GLS350d, driven by a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine producing a robust 255 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Stepping up, the GLS450 features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, delivering a more potent 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. For those seeking even greater performance, the GLS550 boasts a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8, generating a substantial 449 hp and 516 lb-ft. At the pinnacle of the lineup sits the GLS63 AMG, equipped with a formidable twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 unleashing an impressive 577 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque, ensuring exhilarating performance.

Visually, the Mercedes GL Series 2017 GLS adopts the smoother, more refined design language that characterizes the contemporary Mercedes-Benz aesthetic. The most noticeable exterior revisions are focused on the headlights, grille, and bumpers, lending a more modern and elegant appearance. To cater to those desiring a sportier aesthetic, Mercedes-Benz offers an optional sport package. This package introduces more aggressively styled bumpers with enlarged air intakes, along with striking 21-inch light-alloy wheels, prominent side sills, and side flaps color-matched to the body.

Inside the Mercedes GL Series 2017 GLS, occupants are treated to a luxurious cabin featuring seven comfortable seats arranged across three rows. While the overall dashboard layout remains familiar, notable updates include a redesigned instrument cluster, a new multifunction steering wheel, and the integration of a touchpad-based interface for enhanced control. Furthermore, a comprehensive suite of electronic driver aids is available, either as standard equipment or optional extras. These systems encompass Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Attention Assist, Brake Assist, Lane Keep Assist, blind spot and cross-traffic warning systems, and the advanced Distronic Plus cruise control system with Steering Assist, offering semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

While specific pricing details were pending at the time of announcement, the order books for the Mercedes GL Series 2017 GLS were set to open the following month, with deliveries anticipated to commence by March of the next year. In the competitive full-size luxury SUV segment, the Mercedes GLS faces established rivals such as the Cadillac Escalade, Lexus LX 570, and Lincoln Navigator. Moreover, the segment is poised for further competition with BMW’s impending entry with the new X7.
