Migrating to Brooklyn as a teenager, she pursued her education within the New York City public school system and is a proud graduate of the City University of New York (CUNY). Before her successful election to the City Council in November 2021, Mercedes was deeply embedded in the Brooklyn community as a registered nurse and a small business owner.
