Recent trademark filings have sparked rumors of a potential return for the Mercedes Benz S Class Coupe, a body style previously discontinued with the current W223 generation S-Class. Enthusiasts and industry experts are keenly watching as signs point towards Mercedes reconsidering its position in the luxury coupe market.
First brought to light by Car and Driver, these trademark applications submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) showcase designs that strongly suggest coupe variants of the latest S-Class. Notably, Mercedes ceased production of the coupe and convertible versions when this generation was introduced as a 2021 model, making this potential revival particularly significant.
One of the trademarked designs strongly resembles a Maybach S-Class Coupe. It features the distinctive Maybach grille, complemented by chrome air intakes and the iconic hood ornament. These design elements are consistent with the existing Maybach S-Class sedan and Maybach GLS-Class SUV, reinforcing the likelihood of a super-luxury coupe variant. The second design leans towards a more performance-oriented AMG Mercedes Benz S Class Coupe aesthetic. This version sports the grille currently seen on the AMG S 63 E Performance sedan and proudly displays an AMG badge on the trunk, signaling a high-performance coupe option.
Intriguingly, these filings were not directly made by Mercedes-Benz. Instead, Robu Aktiengesellschaft, the same entity that trademarked the Bussink GT R SpeedLegend in 2021, is listed as the applicant. The Bussink GT R SpeedLegend, a radical modification of the AMG GT by HWA – a long-time Mercedes motorsports partner – bore a resemblance to the recent AMG PureSpeed concept.
The AMG PureSpeed, a limited-edition roadster with a Formula 1-inspired halo safety system, marks the debut of Mercedes’ Mythos series, reserved for exclusive and ultra-rare vehicles. It is speculated that these trademarked S-Class Coupe designs could potentially become future additions to the Mythos series. This would mean that, unlike the previous generation Mercedes Benz S Class Coupe, these new models would not be mass-produced. The PureSpeed, for instance, is limited to a mere 250 units, emphasizing exclusivity.
The potential re-emergence of a Mercedes Benz S Class Coupe, especially in Maybach and AMG trims, aligns perfectly with Mercedes-Benz’s current strategic direction. The automaker is increasingly focusing on high-end vehicles and bespoke customization options for affluent clientele. This move positions Mercedes to compete more directly with ultra-luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, catering to the desires of the most discerning customers seeking unparalleled luxury and exclusivity.
