Precision Dynamics with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ and Torque Control

A cornerstone of the GLA 45’s exceptional driving dynamics is the active, fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. This sophisticated system incorporates AMG TORQUE CONTROL to enable selective power distribution to the rear wheels. This means power is not just shifted between the front and rear axles, but also intelligently distributed between the left and right rear wheels. The system continuously adjusts power delivery based on driving conditions, optimizing traction on any surface and through every corner. This remarkable capability stems from a redesigned rear axle differential equipped with two electronically controlled multi-disc clutches, each dedicated to controlling power flow to an individual rear wheel. This intricate system allows for nuanced power adjustments, maximizing grip and responsiveness whether you’re navigating city streets or pushing limits on a track.

The Heart of a Champion: New Four-Cylinder Turbo Engine

At the core of the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG lies the newly developed M139 2.0-liter engine, a marvel of engineering and the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production. In the GLA 45, this engine unleashes 382 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, outperforming its predecessor in both metrics. Adhering to the prestigious “One Man, One Engine” principle, each engine is meticulously handcrafted on an innovative production line in Affalterbach, ensuring unparalleled quality and precision. This commitment to craftsmanship results in an engine that not only delivers breathtaking power but also embodies the spirit of AMG performance.

This potent engine propels the compact performance SUV from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.3 seconds (estimated), showcasing its exceptional acceleration. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, emphasizing the GLA 45’s focus on controlled high-performance driving. Beyond sheer power, the engine is engineered for responsiveness. AMG engineers meticulously tuned the torque curve (“torque shaping”) to deliver peak torque of 354 lb-ft across a broad range from 4,750 to 5,000 rpm. This careful calibration provides a power delivery characteristic reminiscent of a naturally aspirated engine, offering linear and immediate response throughout the rev range.

Innovative Engine Design for Peak Performance

The M139 engine boasts a suite of intelligent design features that contribute to its exceptional performance. Unlike the transverse mounting found in the AMG 35-series models, this engine is rotated 180 degrees on its vertical axis. This repositioning places the turbocharger and exhaust manifold at the rear, closer to the firewall, while the intake system is positioned at the front. This innovative configuration enables a flatter and more aerodynamic front-end design for the vehicle. Furthermore, the revised layout optimizes airflow with shorter, less convoluted ducts for both intake and exhaust, enhancing engine breathing and efficiency.

The engine utilizes a new twin-scroll turbocharger, engineered to provide both rapid responsiveness at lower engine speeds and substantial power at higher rpm. For the first time, the compressor and turbine wheel shaft are mounted on anti-friction bearings, minimizing mechanical friction within the turbocharger. This advanced bearing technology allows the turbocharger to respond swiftly and reach its maximum speed of up to 169,000 rpm with remarkable speed. With a peak charge pressure of 2.1 bar, this 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine leads its segment in boost pressure as well. The electronically controlled wastegate (exhaust relief valve) offers precise and flexible charge pressure management, further optimizing responsiveness, especially during acceleration from partial load conditions.

Advanced Fuel Injection and Cooling Systems

To achieve optimal combustion and power delivery, the new high-performance four-cylinder engine employs a two-stage fuel injection system – a first for AMG’s four-cylinder engines. The first stage utilizes highly precise and rapid piezo injectors to directly inject fuel into the combustion chambers at pressures up to 200 bar, managed by the engine control system. The second stage supplements this with intake manifold injection using solenoid valves. This dual-injection approach is crucial for achieving the engine’s high specific output and ensuring efficient fuel delivery under varying load conditions. The electronically controlled fuel supply operates at a pressure of 6.7 bar, ensuring consistent and reliable fuel delivery.

Managing the immense heat generated by such a high-output engine requires a sophisticated cooling system. The system is intelligently designed to cool the cylinder head and crankcase to different temperature levels. This innovative approach allows for a cooler cylinder head, maximizing power and enabling efficient ignition timing, while maintaining a warmer crankcase to reduce internal engine friction. A mechanical water pump handles cylinder head cooling, while a second, electrically driven high-performance water pump manages crankcase cooling. This electric pump remains inactive during cold starts until the engine warms up, and during operation, it is regulated by the engine control unit to ensure optimal crankcase temperature management based on driving conditions.

“One Man, One Engine”: Handcrafted Excellence

The M139 engine is a testament to handcrafted excellence, assembled entirely by hand at AMG’s engine production facility in Affalterbach. A completely redesigned production line embodies the “One Man, One Engine” principle, integrating Industry 4.0 processes to an innovative level. This facility reflects the latest advancements in ergonomics, material flow, quality assurance, sustainability, and efficiency. AMG’s hand assembly operation, in its pursuit of Industry 4.0, embodies “smart production,” ensuring maximum flexibility, transparency, and efficiency. Innovative digital technologies safeguard and enhance engine quality and production processes, maintaining the highest standards of AMG craftsmanship.

Agile Gear Shifts with AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8-Speed Transmission

Contributing to the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG‘s agile and dynamic character is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. The gear ratios are meticulously configured to provide highly responsive acceleration across the speed range, combined with rapid gear changes and optimized transitions during upshifts. Depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving mode, the driver experiences distinct drive configurations with varying accelerator and gearshift characteristics.

The standard RACE-START function enables maximum acceleration from a standstill, delivering an exhilarating performance launch. This is further amplified by the dynamic drive sound, featuring partial ignition interruption during upshifts and automatic double-declutching during downshifts. Despite its performance focus, the GLA 45 incorporates efficiency features. In “Comfort” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active, and the “gliding” function can be selected in “Individual” driving mode, showcasing a balance between performance and efficiency.

Enhanced Traction with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ and AMG TORQUE CONTROL

The standard fully variable all-wheel drive system significantly enhances the dynamic driving experience. The key innovation is AMG TORQUE CONTROL within the new rear axle differential. This system utilizes two electronically controlled multi-disc clutches, each connected to a rear axle drive shaft. This allows for variable power distribution not only between the front and rear wheels but also selectively between the left and right rear wheels. The result is consistently optimized traction, even in challenging road conditions or during aggressive cornering, such as on a closed race circuit.

The drive torque control for both front-rear axle distribution and left-right rear wheel distribution is electromechanical. Factors influencing torque distribution include driving speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering angle, wheel speed differences, gear selection, and accelerator position. Electromechanical control offers advantages over electrohydraulic systems, primarily in providing more refined driving dynamics due to significantly faster response and speed-independent actuation of the discs across the entire adjustment range.

The all-wheel drive control characteristics are influenced by the selected drive mode and AMG DYNAMICS setting. In “Basic” and “Advanced” AMG DYNAMICS settings, the 4MATIC system operates in “Comfort” mode. In “Pro” and “Master” (part of the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package), the 4MATIC system switches to “Sport” mode, delivering even more agile handling and pushing the limits of dynamic performance.

Optimized Suspension for Dynamic Handling

The new AMG suspension system provides the foundation for exceptional directional stability and dynamic cornering, minimizing body roll. Simultaneously, comfort is improved compared to the previous GLA 45. Longitudinal and transverse dynamics are perfectly coordinated. All suspension components are thoroughly revised to achieve higher maximum lateral acceleration while maintaining easy vehicle control at the limits.

The front axle utilizes a McPherson strut design, featuring one transverse control arm below the wheel center, one suspension strut, and one tie rod. The specialized axle geometry reduces torque steer, enhancing both comfort and agile handling. New aluminum wishbones reduce unsprung mass, improving spring response sensitivity. Race-derived radially bolted front axle brake calipers enhance stability. The front axle carrier is rigidly attached, further stiffening the front section.

The 4-link rear suspension is also rigidly connected to the body via a rear axle carrier, ensuring torsional rigidity. Each rear wheel features three transverse control arms, one trailing arm, and specific bearings. This design maximizes driving stability and agility, contributing to the GLA 45’s confident handling.
