The Unlikely Star Car: Alfred Morris and His Beloved 1991 Mazda 626

In a world dominated by high-end vehicles and luxury brands, Dallas Cowboys’ parking lot holds a unique gem – Alfred Morris’s 1991 Mazda 626. This isn’t just any old car; it’s a symbol of humility and a testament to cherished memories, standing proudly amongst the expensive rides of his teammates.

Morris, the Cowboys’ running back, acquired this Mazda 626 during his junior year at Florida Atlantic University. Purchased for a mere $2 from his pastor, this first car accompanied him through graduation and into his successful NFL career. Affectionately nicknamed “Bentley,” this 1991 Mazda 626 serves as a constant reminder for Morris to stay grounded, regardless of his fame and fortune.

The story of Morris and his vintage Mazda 626 gained traction in 2013 when he was a rising star with the Washington Redskins. His dedication to his aging Mazda became a heartwarming news story. Local Mazda dealers in the Washington, D.C. area, touched by his story, decided to take action and revitalize this iconic vehicle, ensuring its longevity and preserving its rich history.

Their mission was threefold: to restore the car as closely as possible to its original 1991 factory condition, to completely overhaul and rejuvenate all mechanical systems to a like-new state, and to subtly integrate a few carefully chosen modern amenities and safety features.

The restoration process was extensive. The Mazda 626 was stripped down to its bare metal frame. Body panels were meticulously replaced to eliminate any signs of dents or rust. The body was then treated with three layers of its original factory paint, followed by a lustrous pearlescent top coat and two protective clear coats to guarantee a lasting finish. Every piece of trim was replaced, with some parts even being specially reproduced from the original molds in Japan.

The interior of the Mazda 626 received an equally impressive transformation. Mazda dealers completely revamped and customized the cabin, installing a state-of-the-art 7-inch Pioneer touch screen stereo and navigation system, complemented by Rockford-Fosgate speakers and a convenient back-up camera. To enhance modern convenience and security, remote power door locks and an alarm system were also added, along with a comprehensive sound insulation layer using Dynamat products, ensuring a quieter and more comfortable ride.

In a nod to the car’s “Bentley” nickname, the restorers added bespoke, hand-stitched dash cover, along with new seat upholstery and door panels featuring Bentley-esque diamond quilting stitched into the fabric. A luxurious Alcantara headliner and ultra-plush carpets completed the interior overhaul. Throughout the customization, maintaining the original gray interior color scheme was paramount, ensuring a seamless blend of classic and modern elements.

Even after this remarkable restoration, Morris continues to use his Mazda 626 as his daily vehicle. While his teammates may opt for more extravagant and expensive cars, Morris’s 1991 Mazda 626 holds a value that far exceeds monetary worth – it is a vehicle rich in memories and a powerful symbol of humility and gratitude.
