Under the hood, the LS 500 retains its potent 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, delivering an impressive 416 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, befitting a flagship sedan. In pursuit of even greater refinement, the engine features newly designed pistons with a lip shape on the piston top. This subtle yet effective change contributes to lower emissions and quieter operation, particularly during cold starts. The wastegate control on the twin-turbo system has been updated to ensure stable valve operation, thereby improving engine performance efficiency. The 10-speed automatic transmission also benefits from recalibrated shift logic, optimized to keep the engine operating within its most responsive power band more frequently.

In rear-wheel-drive configuration, the LS 500 achieves a 0-60 mph acceleration time of just 4.6 seconds. Drivers can customize powertrain responsiveness through selectable drive modes including Eco, Comfort, Normal, Custom, Sport S, and Sport S+. The available all-wheel-drive system utilizes a Torsen® limited-slip center differential, enhancing grip, traction, and cornering stability. The torque distribution dynamically adjusts from a 31 percent front / 69 percent rear split on dry roads to as much as 48 percent front / 52 percent rear on slippery surfaces, ensuring optimal performance in varied conditions.

The Lexus LS 500h hybrid model utilizes a Multistage Hybrid System, combining a naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with two electric motor/generators powered by a compact lithium-ion battery. For the 2021 iteration, significant enhancements have been made to the Multistage Hybrid System. The system now features revised tuning to leverage a new battery strategy, channeling more power through the electric motors during acceleration. The Multistage shift software has also been updated to capitalize on this readily available electric power earlier in the powerband. The combined system output, blending the internal combustion engine and electric traction system, is 354 horsepower, enabling the LS 500h to achieve a 0-60 mph sprint in 5.1 seconds (RWD).

Next-Generation Interior: A Sanctuary of Comfort and Technology

The interior of the 2021 Lexus LS has been meticulously crafted to further enhance passenger comfort and elevate the sense of luxury. Numerous subtle improvements have been implemented throughout the cabin, focusing on touchpoints and tactile experiences. Armrests, seat cushions, and the center console armrest padding now incorporate additional foam material, enhancing softness and support. The front seats have been redesigned with revised seat springs and thicker cushioning beneath a surface featuring stitching patterns specifically designed to maximize comfort over long journeys.

For improved visibility and a more cohesive aesthetic, controls on the steering wheel and center console are now uniformly finished in black. A dedicated switch has been added to the center console to provide direct access to the frequently used seat heater and steering wheel heater controls, improving operability and convenience.

The 2021 Lexus LS introduces a new Palomino Leather interior option, expanding the range of personalization choices. New interior ornamentation options, including Black Laser Special and Open Pore Black, offer further customization. Executive models offer the exquisite Kiriko Glass ornamentation and hand-folded pleats on the door trim, exemplifying Lexus’s “Innovative elegance through Japanese craftsmanship” and a true handcrafted approach. The Kiriko glass ornamentation, a world-first in a production vehicle, draws inspiration from traditional Japanese Kiriko glassware. The intricate patterns are created using a meticulous hand-cutting technique, carving clear colors and delicate lines into the glass, which is then repeatedly polished to achieve a soft, captivating glow.

Technology seamlessly integrates into the luxurious cabin with a new 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen, offering enhanced control for both driver and passenger.
