GM Recalls Trucks: Over 132,000 Silverado and Sierra HD Models Affected by Tailgate Issue

General Motors (GM) has announced a significant recall affecting over 132,000 of its 2024 model year Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks. The recall, officially initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), addresses a potential safety issue concerning the power-unlatching tailgates on these popular pickup trucks.

The recall impacts specific configurations of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, and GMC Sierra 2500 HD, 3500 HD models. These vehicles are equipped with power-unlatching tailgates, a feature designed for convenient access to the truck bed. However, a defect has been identified that could lead to unexpected tailgate openings, posing a safety risk.

The core problem lies with water intrusion affecting the exterior touchpad switch assembly of the tailgate. This water ingress can cause a short circuit in the electronic gate-release switch. As a result, the tailgate could inadvertently unlatch and swing open while the truck is parked.

The NHTSA emphasizes the potential hazard created by this issue. “An unlatched tailgate may open and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash,” the safety administration stated. This scenario is particularly concerning as items in the truck bed could fall out onto the road, endangering other drivers and potentially leading to accidents.

To remedy this safety concern, GM dealers will perform a free repair for all affected truck owners. The repair involves replacing the exterior touchpad switch assembly on the tailgate. This replacement is designed to prevent water intrusion and eliminate the risk of unintended tailgate unlatching.

Owners of the recalled Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks are advised to be vigilant and ensure their tailgate is securely closed and latched before operating their vehicles. GM has stated that notification letters will be sent to affected owners by mail starting in mid-January.

For further information or to address immediate concerns, owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
