One Month with the G80 M3 Competition: An Owner’s Honest Review

After immersing myself in the world of the G80 M3 Comp for a month, it’s time to share my initial impressions. While a video review is in the works for my YouTube channel, I wanted to provide a written overview of the highlights of living with this performance machine. As someone with a history of driving and owning various BMW M models and other sports cars, including a recent 991.2 Porsche 911 GTS, I have a solid benchmark for comparison. My experience includes several generations of the M3 (E36, E46, F80 Comp), various turbocharged 3 Series models, and even a Ford Mustang 5.0. This diverse background helps frame my perspective on the latest iteration of the iconic M3.

G80 M3 Competition: The Positives

The g80 m3 comp immediately impresses with its blend of comfort and aggressive performance. It’s a car that’s remarkably easy to live with daily, yet stands ready to unleash thrilling power at a moment’s notice.

Supreme Comfort and Daily Drivability

One of the most surprising aspects of the g80 m3 comp is its exceptional comfort. Getting in and out is effortless, and the driving position is perfectly tailored for both spirited drives and mundane commutes. This car feels like it was designed for everyday life, which is a significant advantage over some more hardcore sports cars.

Striking Aesthetics

Beauty is subjective, but in my eyes, the g80 m3 comp is a stunning vehicle. The profile is undeniably attractive, and while the front grille initially sparked debate, I’ve come to appreciate its bold and distinctive design. It gives the car an aggressive stance and a modern, luxurious appeal that sets it apart.

Cutting-Edge Technology

Stepping into the g80 m3 comp from a 991.2 Porsche feels like entering the next generation of automotive technology. The larger iDrive screen is a joy to use, offering crisp graphics and intuitive navigation. The ambient lighting options add a touch of personalization, and the overall system layout is well-thought-out. While I have encountered a few minor software quirks, such as occasional radio glitches or slight screen responsiveness issues, these are infrequent and could potentially be user-related.

Astonishing Power and Performance

The sheer power of the g80 m3 comp is breathtaking. The S58 engine delivers relentless acceleration, pulling strongly even when you think it might be reaching its limits. On open roads and highways, this car is an absolute beast, offering effortless speed and overtaking capability. The performance is truly in another league.

Impressive Steering and Handling

For a car of its size and weight, the g80 m3 comp exhibits remarkable steering and handling prowess. While it doesn’t quite match the surgical precision and feedback of a 911 GTS, it surpasses expectations for its class. The steering is well-weighted and provides a good sense of connection to the road. Concerns about numb steering or excessive understeer haven’t materialized in my experience, especially with the Pilot Sport 4S tires providing excellent grip. The g80 m3 comp handles corners with confidence and agility, defying its saloon dimensions.

Powerful and Responsive Brakes

The brakes on the g80 m3 comp are nothing short of phenomenal. They offer immense stopping power and a reassuringly firm pedal feel. BMW M brakes have always been impressive, but these feel a step above, providing confidence-inspiring performance in all driving situations. (We will address the auditory aspect of these brakes shortly).

G80 M3 Competition: Areas for Improvement

Despite its many strengths, the g80 m3 comp isn’t without its minor drawbacks. These are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things but worth noting for potential buyers.

The Infamous Brake Squeal

The brake squeal issue in the g80 m3 comp is a real and frustrating problem. Having owned multiple M cars, I’m familiar with brake bedding procedures and typical M brake characteristics. However, the squealing from the g80 m3 comp brakes is excessive and persistent. It’s embarrassing for a car in this price range to sound like a school bus approaching a stoplight. While aftermarket solutions like iSweep pads are available, it’s disappointing that BMW hasn’t addressed this issue with better OEM materials.

Fuel Consumption

While not unexpected in a high-performance vehicle, the fuel economy of the g80 m3 comp is noteworthy. It’s thirstier than my previous 911 GTS, likely around 20% more in my estimation. While I was aware of the potential for higher fuel consumption, the reality is still a bit surprising. If fuel efficiency is a primary concern, the g80 m3 comp might not be the ideal choice.

Transmission Jerkiness at Low Speeds

The transmission, while quick and precise during spirited driving, exhibits some clunkiness at lower speeds. Maneuvering in parking lots or navigating stop-and-go traffic can reveal some jerky behavior, particularly over uneven surfaces. It lacks the silky smoothness of a PDK in these situations. While not a deal-breaker, it’s a noticeable characteristic compared to more refined transmissions.

Overall G80 M3 Competition Ownership Score (After One Month)

  1. Power/Performance: 9
  2. Styling: 8
  3. Handling: 8
  4. Brakes: 7.5 (potential 9 if the squealing is resolved)
  5. Comfort: 8.5
  6. Technology: 8
  7. Efficiency: 6.5
  8. Daily Driver-ability: 9
  9. Passenger Comfort: 9 (My wife is a big fan!)

Overall 1-Month Score: 8.2/10

Final Verdict

The g80 m3 comp is an exceptional performance sedan that delivers on multiple fronts. It’s immensely enjoyable to drive, offers thrilling performance, and is surprisingly practical for daily use. While minor issues like brake squeal and fuel consumption exist, they are overshadowed by the car’s overall brilliance. While it might not be a direct replacement for the precision of a 911, the g80 m3 comp excels as a versatile and engaging daily driver that brings a smile to my face every time I get behind the wheel. It’s a truly wonderful car and a worthy successor to the M3 lineage.
