Ford Sierra: A Deep Dive into a Saab-Turbocharged Masterpiece

Custom car builds often capture our attention, but some truly demand a closer inspection. Michael Scullin’s Ford Sierra is one such vehicle. While on the surface, it may appear to be a classic Ford Sierra with a 2.0L DOHC 16-valve turbo engine and lowered suspension – a common sight for car enthusiasts – the depth of modifications and the unique approach taken by its owner elevate this Sierra far beyond the ordinary. This isn’t just another modified Ford Sierra; it’s a testament to creativity and skillful execution, deserving of a detailed exploration.

My first encounter with Michael’s Ford Sierra was at Dubshed earlier this year, and it was an instant stop-in-my-tracks moment. The car exuded a unique aura that compelled me to learn more. It felt only fitting to delve into the story of this exceptional Ford Sierra in the very workshop where its transformation took place, nestled in the Northern Irish countryside. This humble space is where Michael brings his automotive visions to life, not only through builds like this Sierra but also by sharing his passion for cars through his podcast, Limited Slip Differences.

From Humble Beginnings to Fire Red Flair: The Ford Sierra Exterior

Starting life as a standard Ford Sierra 2.0L twin cam, most would anticipate the typical modifications: RS Cosworth wheels, a raked stance, and perhaps some performance tweaks. However, Michael envisioned something far more distinctive for his Ford Sierra. Cloaked in a vibrant Fire Red, the exterior maintains a degree of subtlety, especially considering the mechanical marvels concealed beneath. However, subtle aggression is achieved through the incorporation of a Sierra RS Cosworth front bumper and a Rouse-style splitter, lending a more purposeful and sporty demeanor. RS Cosworth side skirts and rear spats further refine the aesthetic, harmonizing the overall design of this modified Ford Sierra.

Interior Elegance: Cosworth Touches and Performance Seating

The interior of the Ford Sierra follows a similar theme of understated yet purposeful modifications. Simplicity reigns, but with carefully selected upgrades that enhance both style and function. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII Recaro front seats, re-trimmed in suede, offer superior support and a touch of luxury. The rear bench, sourced from a Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth, maintains a cohesive Ford Sierra feel. A chunky RS Cosworth three-spoke steering wheel adds to the sporty ambiance and is paired with a power steering pump from an Opel Astra for improved maneuverability.

The Heart Transplant: Saab Turbo Power in a Ford Sierra

Moving to the engine bay is where this Ford Sierra truly deviates from the expected. While a Ford Cosworth YB engine might be the predictable choice for a performance Sierra, Michael opted for a less conventional, yet highly potent powerplant: a Saab B204. This 2.0-litre, 16-valve turbocharged engine, originally found in Saab 900, 9000, and 9-3 models, has gained underground popularity for its impressive power potential at a more accessible price point than engines like the Nissan SR20DET or Cosworth YB. Despite initial challenges, Michael, with expert assistance from Ali McClelland of Ali’s Garage, has unlocked the engine’s true capabilities. Once the ECU mapping is finalized, the target is an impressive 480hp, transforming this Ford Sierra into a serious performance machine.

To achieve this power output, significant upgrades have been implemented. A Pulsar 5449G (G25-660) turbocharger, coupled with a Precision Turbo PW46 external wastegate, forms the core of the forced induction system. This setup dramatically alters the Ford Sierra’s driving characteristics and enhances its reliability. An FMIC Performance front-mount intercooler ensures cool, dense air is fed to the engine via a Honda throttle body. Uprated fuel pump and 875cc injectors guarantee adequate fuel delivery to match the increased airflow. A custom aluminium radiator from Lee Smart Racing manages engine temperatures, even under demanding driving conditions. Gauges monitoring air/fuel ratio, boost, oil temperature, and pressure are strategically placed in the A-pillar and center console, providing crucial real-time engine data.

Driveline Dynamics: BMW Gearbox and Cosworth Strength

The unconventional approach extends beyond the engine bay into the driveline of this Ford Sierra. A BMW E30 M3 5-speed gearbox has been adapted, chosen for its strength and gear ratios. A Saab 9-5 Aero flywheel, Sachs pressure plate, and custom six-paddle clutch manage the power transfer from the Saab engine to the BMW gearbox. A custom propeller shaft links the gearbox to a robust Sierra RS Cosworth rear end, equipped with a Gripper Differentials LSD (Limited Slip Differential) to ensure optimal traction and power delivery to the wheels. This combination of components creates a driveline capable of handling the projected 480hp output of the Saab turbo engine in this Ford Sierra.

Hydraulic Suspension: Form and Function in Harmony

Perhaps the most visually striking modification, and a key element to the Ford Sierra’s unique stance, is its custom hydraulic suspension system. Unlike air suspension or coilovers, hydraulics were chosen, not for bouncing or lowrider theatrics, but for a specific aesthetic and practical reason. Each corner is individually controlled via its own switch, powered by a converted B7 VW Passat pump. The rationale behind hydraulics is primarily form-driven. The slimmer profile of hydraulic uprights compared to coilovers or airbags provided the crucial millimeters needed to achieve the desired wheel fitment and stance. This unconventional suspension setup is central to the Ford Sierra’s distinctive visual appeal.

Wheels, Brakes, and a Touring Car Stance

Completing the visual package are timeless white Buddy Club P1 wheels, injecting a touch of Japanese tuning influence into this European fusion. The lowered hydraulic suspension allows the wheels to sit perfectly within the arches, realizing Michael’s vision of an early-’90s touring car aesthetic for his Ford Sierra. To ensure stopping power matches the enhanced performance, the brakes have been upgraded to a Porsche 911 setup, adapted to fit Ford Granada hubs. This combination of wheels and brakes not only enhances the Ford Sierra’s performance but also contributes significantly to its overall visual impact and stance.

A Ford Sierra That Can Do It All

As my time with Michael and his Ford Sierra drew to a close, I couldn’t help but steal one last admiring glance. This is a Ford Sierra that transcends typical car classifications. Whether it’s commanding attention on the show floor at Dubshed, engaging in spirited driving, or simply cruising the streets, this modified Ford Sierra is remarkably versatile. It’s a testament to unconventional thinking, skillful execution, and a passion for pushing automotive boundaries – brilliantly bonkers indeed.
