Ford Shelby GT500KR: King of the Road Mustangs Through the Years

The Ford Shelby GT500KR, an iconic name in the world of muscle cars, boasts a rich history and a legacy of high performance. The “KR,” standing for “King of the Road,” is more than just a designation; it’s a testament to Shelby American’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of Mustang performance across different generations.

The story of the GT500KR began in 1968 amidst a rivalry with Chevrolet. Ford, upon learning about Chevrolet’s intention to name their new Corvette “King of the Road,” seized the opportunity. Carroll Shelby, wanting to use the name himself, quickly secured the “King of the Road” trademark. This led to the birth of the 1968 Shelby GT500KR, powered by the potent 428 Cobra Jet engine. Produced in limited numbers, these original GT500KRs are highly prized by collectors today, representing a golden era of American muscle.

Decades later, the King returned. At the 2007 New York International Auto Show, Shelby unveiled the second generation GT500KR, based on the contemporary GT500. This revival was not just about nostalgia; it was a significant performance upgrade. The 2008-2009 GT500KR featured an additional 40 horsepower, enhanced suspension for sharper handling, and a distinctive carbon fiber hood to reduce weight. Forged aluminum wheels and specially developed tires further contributed to its performance-oriented nature. These models were meticulously assembled at Shelby World Headquarters in Las Vegas, reinforcing their exclusivity and performance pedigree.

Celebrating Shelby American’s 60th anniversary, the King of the Road was reborn once more, this time on the platform of the 2020-2022 Ford Mustang GT500. This latest iteration is the most powerful GT500KR yet. Featuring a larger supercharger, it unleashes over 900 horsepower. A vented dry carbon fiber hood, one-piece forged monoblock wheels, a performance Borla exhaust system, and upgraded suspension components further elevate its performance. The interior also received bespoke touches, completing the transformation into a modern King of the Road. This limited-edition model serves as a fitting tribute to the GT500KR legacy, blending historical significance with cutting-edge performance.
