Ford Capri: The Electric SUV Stablemate to the Mustang Returns

Ford has announced the revival of a beloved nameplate, bringing back the Capri as an all-electric SUV, designed as a stablemate to the iconic Ford Mustang, but tailored for the European market. This reimagining of the “cult classic” Capri was unveiled on Wednesday, signaling Ford’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup in Europe.

Originally conceived as a stylish two-door coupe, the Ford Capri captured the hearts of enthusiasts when it first rolled off the production line in 1968. Produced by Ford of Britain, it quickly became known as “Europe’s Mustang” due to its sporty appeal and accessible price point. Production continued until December 1986, leaving a legacy of stylish and fun-to-drive cars. The Capri even made its way to the United States in 1970 under the Lincoln-Mercury banner, marketed simply as “The Capri,” and was positioned as an affordable import until 1977. Later, the Mercury Capri was reintroduced in 1979 as a more direct Mustang counterpart until 1986, and briefly as a roadster in the early 90s.

Now, the Capri is making a comeback for the modern era as a mid-size electric crossover. It shares a Volkswagen platform with the Explorer EV, indicating a strategic partnership in Ford’s electric vehicle development. The new Ford Capri EV will be manufactured in Cologne, Germany, echoing the production location of the original first-generation models from 1970 to 1978.

Car and Driver reports that the electric Capri will be available in two “Extended Range” configurations. The base model boasts 282 horsepower and an impressive 390 miles of range. Charging is also rapid, with the ability to replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 28 minutes. For those seeking more performance, the premium model adds a second motor, enabling all-wheel drive and increasing power to 335 horsepower. While offering slightly less range at 368 miles, the premium Capri compensates with quicker charging, achieving a 10 to 80 percent charge in approximately 26 minutes.

Despite its strong connection to the Mustang lineage and appeal as a European counterpart, current plans indicate that the Ford Capri EV is exclusively destined for the European market. There are no announcements suggesting a release in the United States, meaning American enthusiasts eager for this electric stablemate to the Mustang will have to admire it from afar, for now.

This revival of the Ford Capri as an electric SUV marks an interesting chapter in the model’s history and Ford’s broader electrification strategy in Europe. As a “Mustang stablemate,” the Capri EV is poised to capture a new generation of drivers while rekindling the passion of long-time fans.
