Volvo is making a bold move into an all-electric future, and the 2025 EX90 is leading the charge as its new flagship model. This three-row, seven-seat SUV, while classified as full-size, firmly plants Volvo in the competitive Electric Midsize Suv segment with its advanced technology and family-friendly dimensions. Building on Volvo’s first dedicated EV platform, the EX90 is slightly larger and packed with more innovation than the current XC90, signaling a significant leap forward for the brand. Volvo’s ambitious plan includes launching a new electric vehicle each year, aiming for a fully electric lineup by 2030. The EX90 is available for pre-order now and is expected to hit the market in early 2024, followed by the 2025 Volvo EX30, a smaller, more accessible subcompact crossover, arriving in dealerships in the latter half of 2024.
Projected to start under $80,000, the EX90 positions itself as a true luxury electric midsize SUV. It is poised to compete directly with other premium all-wheel-drive electric SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, Rivian R1S, BMW iX, the forthcoming Lucid Gravity, and three-row configurations of the Tesla Model X.
While Volvo’s sister company, Polestar, will offer the smaller Polestar 3 SUV on the same platform, the 2025 EX90 distinguishes itself within the electric midsize SUV category by balancing size, performance, and value. Although not as large or powerful as some rivals, the EX90 comes remarkably close in specifications while offering a more accessible price point, particularly when compared to most competitors excluding Rivian. Furthermore, the EX90 introduces cutting-edge safety and driver-assistance systems, incorporating both software and hardware designed for potential hands-free highway driving in the future. Volvo confidently states that the EX90 will be their safest vehicle to date, reinforcing their long-standing commitment to safety innovation in the electric midsize SUV market.
Powering this electric midsize SUV are dual-motor, all-wheel-drive systems, promising a range of 300 miles or more, ensuring capability and efficiency for daily driving and longer journeys.
The interior design of the EX90 takes a minimalist approach, reminiscent of Tesla’s styling, featuring a clean dashboard dominated by a prominent, vertically oriented touchscreen. The exterior, however, remains distinctly Volvo, showcasing signature Thor’s Hammer headlights, a bold Volvo logo, vertical taillights, and strong, sculpted rear lines. Highlighting its role as Volvo’s technological flagship is a noticeable bulge at the top center of the windshield. This houses an array of lidar sensors, utilizing laser imaging, detection, and ranging technology to enhance the EX90’s lane and obstacle detection systems, even in complete darkness. This advanced sensor suite underscores Volvo’s dedication to pioneering safety features within the electric midsize SUV segment.
Customer deliveries are scheduled to commence in early 2024, with pre-order holders gaining the opportunity to configure their vehicles later this year for priority delivery. Availability is expected across all states initially, with a focus on EV-friendly regions such as Southern California, Silicon Valley, the San Francisco Bay Area, the Pacific Northwest, the Eastern Seaboard, Colorado, and Texas. Production of the EX90 will take place at Volvo’s plant in South Carolina, and select models priced under $80,000 may qualify for the federal clean vehicle tax credit of up to $7,500, contingent on battery content requirements.
Volvo unveiled the EX90 well in advance of its production start, and details regarding standard versus optional features are still forthcoming. Driving evaluations are also pending. A comprehensive assessment of the EX90’s competitive standing in the electric midsize SUV market will be possible once driving impressions and further specifications become available.
