Mercedes CLK DTM: The Rare and Extreme Performance Mercedes You Need to Know

The Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM is an exceptionally rare model, representing one of the most exhilarating driving experiences offered by Mercedes-Benz in 2005. This remarkable vehicle was crafted as a tribute to the CLK racing cars that dominated the German Touring Car Masters championship (DTM) from 2000 to 2003. Exclusivity was paramount, with only 100 CLK DTM coupes produced worldwide, offered to select VIP customers at a price point near $300,000. The performance of the CLK DTM positioned it alongside contemporary supercars such as the Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT.

Unlike the more widely recognized CLK GTR, the CLK DTM remains relatively obscure. With a mere 100 units manufactured and none originally sold in the U.S., it embodies a hidden gem, its formidable capabilities often overlooked by even seasoned automotive enthusiasts. Back in 2005, its performance metrics were comparable to the most elite high-performance vehicles available, boasting 574 horsepower and an electronically limited top speed of 200 MPH.

While sharing some visual cues with standard CLK models, the CLK DTM is fundamentally a different machine. The widened wheel arches and distinctive three-piece wheels are unique to the DTM variant, enabling a significantly broader track than any preceding CLK iteration. Weight reduction was a key focus, with the majority of exterior panels constructed from lightweight carbon fiber, a material extensively used throughout the interior as well. Inside, the rear seats were removed and replaced with a carbon fiber panel, underscoring its performance-oriented design. The front occupants are treated to carbon fiber racing seats equipped with six-point harnesses, a feature that contributed to its unavailability for new sale in the U.S. due to seatbelt regulations. The alcantara-wrapped steering wheel is exclusive to the CLK DTM, along with the uniquely designed dashboard and center console.

Mercedes-AMG entrusted the production of the CLK DTM to HWA, the renowned team managing Mercedes’ DTM racing endeavors. The heart of the beast, the M113K supercharged V8 engine, is derived from those found in the E55 and SL55, but underwent substantial modifications and reinforcement by HWA to handle the increased power output. Forged pistons and more aggressive camshafts were implemented to enhance durability under high thermal stress. Cylinder heads were optimized for improved airflow, complemented by a free-flowing exhaust system. A higher-revving twin-screw supercharger was incorporated to elevate boost pressure. The ECU was recalibrated to manage the additional power, and the entire cooling system was upgraded. Even the limited-slip differential received its own external cooler, reflecting the meticulous engineering invested in this high-performance machine.
