The BMW 4 Series has always been synonymous with aesthetic appeal and dynamic driving, carving a niche for itself with its confident style since its inception. With nearly 400,000 units sold worldwide up to the end of 2016, the BMW 4 Series’ popularity is undeniable. Originating in 2013 with the BMW 4 Series Coupe, the family expanded to include the BMW 4 Series Convertible and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe in the following year, offering a diverse range of body styles. These models are produced in Munich (Coupe), Regensburg (Convertible), and Dingolfing (Gran Coupe).
Building on this success, the updated BMW 4 Series models introduce a new chapter, boasting even more refined aesthetics and a retuned suspension for enhanced performance.
Sportier Character Accentuated
The most noticeable change upfront is the introduction of restyled LED headlights, replacing the previous xenon units. Furthermore, all models across the BMW 4 Series range now come standard with LED front fog lamps, enhancing visibility and modernizing the front fascia. At the rear, for the first time on the BMW 4 Series, LED rear lights are implemented, adding a powerful visual signature and improving nighttime visibility. Subtle yet impactful modifications to the air intakes, model-specific trim elements, and a redesigned rear apron further contribute to the vehicle’s striking appearance and emphasize its dynamic intentions.

Inside the cabin, the updates focus on elevating the sense of premium quality and exclusivity. New electroplated detailing, chrome accents, and a center console finished in high-gloss black create a more sophisticated ambiance. A particularly eye-catching detail is the addition of double stitching on the instrument panel, contributing to the handcrafted feel of the interior. BMW also offers greater personalization options with three new upholstery colors and three new interior trim strip designs, allowing drivers to tailor the cabin to their individual preferences.
Exclusively for the new BMW 4 Series models, two new exterior paint finishes are introduced: Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange. These vibrant colors further highlight the sporty nature of the 4 Series. Additionally, each equipment line – Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line, and M Sport – receives a unique new wheel design, reinforcing the distinct character of each trim level. A comprehensive array of optional equipment allows for extensive customization, ensuring that drivers can configure their BMW 4 Series to perfectly match their personal style and needs.
Refined Suspension Dynamics
The BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe models benefit from a revised, stiffer suspension setup. This enhancement is engineered to deliver even sportier handling characteristics without compromising the renowned ride comfort of the BMW 4 Series. Improvements have been made to both lateral and longitudinal dynamics, meaning the car feels more agile and responsive in corners and during acceleration and braking, regardless of the vehicle load. This upgrade applies across the board, encompassing the standard suspension, the M Sport suspension, and the Adaptive suspension options, offering a consistently enhanced driving experience. All updated BMW 4 Series models now exhibit improved straight-line stability at higher speeds and more communicative steering feedback, fostering greater driver confidence and engagement.
Extensive Powertrain Choices
The engine range for the new BMW 4 Series is drawn from the latest BMW EfficientDynamics family, ensuring both performance and efficiency. All petrol and four-cylinder diesel engines incorporate BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Customers can choose from three petrol engines (BMW 420i, BMW 430i, and BMW 440i) and three diesel options (BMW 420d, BMW 430d, BMW 435d xDrive), available across all BMW 4 Series body styles.
The petrol engine power outputs range from 135 kW / 184 hp in the BMW 420i to a potent 240 kW / 326 hp in the BMW 440i. The diesel lineup offers a range from 140 kW / 190 hp in the BMW 420d up to 230 kW / 313 hp in the BMW 435d xDrive, providing a balance of performance and fuel economy.
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe further expands the diesel offerings with the BMW 418d, producing 110 kW / 150 hp, catering to drivers prioritizing efficiency.
BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is optionally available on twelve model variants, providing enhanced traction and stability in various driving conditions. The BMW 435d xDrive comes standard with xDrive across the Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe bodies, ensuring optimal performance in all-weather situations.
Updated Navigation and Instrumentation
The optional Navigation system Professional for the new BMW 4 Series features a redesigned interface with large, tile-style control pads, making the system more user-friendly and intuitive. These pads can be personalized and arranged according to driver preference, displaying real-time updates of menu content for quick access to frequently used functions.
Drivers can also opt for the Multifunctional Instrument Display, which provides customizable digital gauge layouts depending on the selected driving experience mode. This technology allows for a personalized and informative driving experience, tailoring the information displayed to the driver’s needs and preferences.
Sharpened Design for the BMW M4
The high-performance BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible also receive design updates. Adaptive full-LED headlights are now standard, and newly designed full-LED rear lights further enhance the visual appeal and technological sophistication of the M4 models. Interior styling refinements further elevate the sophisticated atmosphere of the sportiest BMW 4 Series variants. Both M4 models are also equipped with the updated Navigation system Professional and benefit from the latest BMW ConnectedDrive features, keeping them at the forefront of technology and connectivity.
