The electric vehicle landscape is rapidly evolving, and BMW is poised to redefine benchmarks with its upcoming Neue Klasse iX3. While the recently updated BMW iX currently holds the crown as the longest-range electric model from the Bavarian automaker, boasting over 700 kilometers (436 miles) in WLTP testing, this achievement is set to be surpassed by the all-new iX3 Neue Klasse.
Announced alongside the start of production for the 2026 BMW iX facelift, the details surrounding the Neue Klasse iX3 have generated considerable excitement. Set to debut this fall, this second-generation electric SUV is engineered to alleviate range anxiety, a primary concern for many prospective EV owners. The current BMW iX already offers a commendable range, exceeding that of many contemporary gasoline-powered vehicles, particularly within its size and weight class. However, BMW is pushing the boundaries further with the Neue Klasse platform.
As previously reported, the Bmw Neue Klasse platform is designed to deliver a minimum range of 600 kilometers (373 miles) across all its electric vehicles. Impressively, certain models within the Neue Klasse family are projected to achieve ranges as high as 900 kilometers (559 miles). This leap in range is primarily attributed to the adoption of BMW’s next-generation Gen6 batteries, featuring round cells that offer a 20% increase in energy density compared to the prismatic Gen5 batteries currently utilized.
Beyond battery advancements, BMW is implementing comprehensive strategies to enhance vehicle efficiency. Significant weight reduction in the new electric motors, approximately 10% lighter than current units, contributes to improved energy consumption. Furthermore, overall vehicle efficiency is targeted for a 20% improvement compared to existing BMW EV models. The integration of 800V technology will unlock ultra-fast DC charging capabilities, ranging from 260 kW to a potential 400 kW. BMW has publicly stated that the Neue Klasse models will offer 30% faster charging times and a 30% increase in range compared to their predecessors.
The BMW iX3 Neue Klasse, slated for production later this year in Debrecen, Hungary, will spearhead this technological revolution. While the specific model variant achieving over 700 km of range remains undisclosed, it is speculated that it will be among the more efficiency-focused versions, such as the rumored 40, 40 xDrive, or 50 xDrive trims, rather than a high-performance M60 xDrive. A rear-wheel-drive configuration is anticipated to be the most efficient, although BMW might opt to equip larger battery packs in the all-wheel-drive xDrive models.
Looking ahead, the forthcoming BMW i3 sedan, expected to enter production in Munich the following year, is projected to exhibit even greater efficiency. Its anticipated lower curb weight and enhanced aerodynamics should enable it to surpass the iX3’s range, assuming it utilizes comparable battery technology. The BMW Neue Klasse iX3 represents a significant stride towards the future of electric mobility, promising extended range and enhanced efficiency, setting new benchmarks for electric SUVs in the premium segment.
