Delving into the Parts Palette
While the set doesn’t introduce any brand new LEGO molds, it compensates with a rich selection of recolored pieces, particularly in the striking 316 Titanium Metallic (Pearl Titanium in BrickLink parlance). This exclusive color makes its debut on several standard LEGO elements, including the versatile 1M wide plates. This is a welcome addition for LEGO builders, expanding the color palette for future creations, especially for those aiming for realistic metallic finishes on their custom models.

The set also introduces several windscreen elements in transparent-black for the first time. These include common windscreen shapes, as well as a couple of exclusive ones, further expanding the options for creating sleek and dark-windowed vehicles within the LEGO Speed Champions scale. The inclusion of ‘Glass For Frame 1 x 3 x 3’ elements in transparent-black is particularly noteworthy as an exclusive part, offering new possibilities for window and glass detailing.

The vibrant yellow parts are unmistakably destined for the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 convertible, adding a splash of color to the set. These yellow elements, including mudguards and curved slopes, contribute to the sporty and eye-catching aesthetic of the SL 63 LEGO model.

Conversely, the black recolors are predominantly used for the robust Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV. These black elements contribute to the G 63’s imposing and powerful presence, reflecting the real-life vehicle’s design.

A particularly interesting recolor is the ‘Bar Holder with Hole and Bar Handle’ in Cool Silver Drum Lacquered / Metallic Silver. This piece, appearing in this finish for the first time, is ideal for adding intricate mechanical details to LEGO models, offering a touch of realism and sophistication.

The ‘Wheel Rim 24 x 12 with Black Tyre’ in Silver Metallic/ Flat Silver is another noteworthy element. While not entirely new, it’s still relatively rare, previously appearing in only a couple of other sets. Its inclusion adds to the overall premium feel of the lego speed champions mercedes models.

Finally, the sheer quantity of 1×5 plates is notable. With 15 in black and 10 in light bluish grey, this set rivals even large-scale sets in its plate count. This abundance of 1×5 plates becomes apparent during the build process, as they are utilized extensively in the construction of both vehicles.

Decorated Details: Prints and Stickers
The set boasts 19 printed parts, excluding spares, all applied to either yellow or black elements. These printed decorations enhance the realism and detail of the lego speed champions mercedes models, avoiding reliance on stickers for key design features.
Image: Printed LEGO pieces from the 76924 set, showcasing detailed stripes, lights, logos, and AMG branding on both yellow and black elements.
The yellow printed parts are specific to the SL 63, including elements for black stripes, triangle details, headlights, taillights and the ‘AMG’ and ‘SL 63’ designations. For the G 63, black printed parts are featured, including a console detail, Mercedes logos (in both light and dark prints), headlight details, and ‘AMG’ branding. The inclusion of two distinct Mercedes logo prints, one light and one dark, is a surprising and appreciated detail, adding authenticity to both models.
While stickers are included, their use is relatively minimal compared to other LEGO Speed Champions sets. They primarily serve to enhance realism, with the G 63’s taillights being the most prominent example where stickers are almost essential for completing the look. Otherwise, many of the stickers are optional, allowing builders to choose their level of detailing.

Minifigure Drivers: Shades of Cool
The set includes two minifigure drivers, both sporting sunglasses and confident smirks, perfectly embodying the cool factor associated with Mercedes-AMG vehicles. Each driver features a uniquely printed torso: one in white and the other in dark bluish grey, adding a touch of exclusivity to these minifigure characters within the lego speed champions mercedes universe.

Building the Beasts: Mercedes-AMG G 63 and SL 63
Mercedes-AMG G 63: Boxy Charm in Bricks
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 build leans towards straightforward techniques, with the most intricate section being the front end. Here, a clever combination of bars, clips, and neck-brackets, built upon upside-down construction, forms the distinctive grille and front fascia.

The use of stacked 1×1 bricks in the build is a curious choice, especially when a single 1x1x3 brick could have occupied the same space. This might have been a deliberate decision to avoid introducing too many recolored parts in yellow. Despite the slightly less accurate windscreen due to limitations in existing LEGO molds, the G 63 model captures the essence of the iconic SUV. While perhaps simpler in design compared to some other LEGO Speed Champions cars, it still holds its own and looks distinctly like a G-Wagon.

A standout feature is the opening bonnet, revealing the intricate neck-bracket construction underneath and a sticker-detailed “engine” bay. The forward rake, created by a two-plate height difference between the front and rear axles, is a noticeable design choice. While potentially divisive in appearance depending on viewing angle, it’s a logical design element dictated by the need for cheese slopes above the rear wheels to achieve the curved rear end, while maintaining a low-profile front. The inclusion of a rear seat, made possible by the simulated retracted soft-top, is another unique detail, along with the subtle curves that become more apparent when viewed from above ground level.

Mercedes-AMG SL 63: Layered Curves and Clever Connections
The Mercedes-AMG SL 63, being the larger of the two models, offers a more involved build experience. It starts with a substantial brick-built chassis, reminiscent of the Ford Bronco R from set 76905.
Image: The early stages of the LEGO Mercedes-AMG SL 63 build, showing the brick-built chassis and tan corner arch bricks.
Early in the build, tan corner 1×1 arch bricks are cleverly integrated amongst Technic elements, their purpose becoming clear as the model takes shape. This stage also marks the beginning of the extensive use of 1×5 plates, with a cluster of seven already forming the base. The build quickly gains height through subsequent steps, creating a layered construction even before adding seats. Breaks from plate-layering are provided by the addition of exhausts and mudguards, the latter utilizing hinges and 2×4 tiles for effective shaping.
Image: Front end construction of the LEGO Mercedes-AMG SL 63, showcasing bar connections and sub-assemblies being secured.
At the front, various bar connections secure different sub-assemblies. A key element is a yellow 1×4 bar that slides into an exposed cross axle hole on 1×2 Technic lift-arms, demonstrating clever use of hidden connection points. The completed SL 63 LEGO model effectively captures the aggressive styling of the real car. Subtlety is present in details like the angled wheel arches formed by the tips of 2×4 tiles, and the printed and titanium metallic parts enhance the monochromatic color scheme.

The rear view highlights the nicely tapered side windows, achieved through subtle angling. The tail-light stickers are crucial for defining the rear, which would otherwise appear somewhat plain. Remarkably, the SL 63 model offers ample space for four minifigures and even a trunk, a surprising level of interior space for a Speed Champions vehicle.

Alternate Robotic Transformations
In a departure from typical alternate builds, this set inspires the creation of robots rather than additional vehicles. The goal was to create robots that didn’t immediately resemble Transformers, achieved by omitting wheels and strategically placing headlight and taillight prints in unconventional locations.

The yellow robot evokes a BIONICLE aesthetic, with a surprising range of motion despite joint limitations. The head design cleverly utilizes printed 3×3 quarter circle slopes, connected using D-snot bricks and brackets for precise spacing.

Hinge elements are less abundant in the G 63’s parts inventory, resulting in a black robot with more limited poseability. However, strategic use of sloped LEGO construction techniques allows for some dynamism and stable, fixed poses.

Final Verdict: Double the Mercedes, Double the Fun
The LEGO Speed Champions 76924 Mercedes-AMG G 63 & SL 63 set delivers a compelling package. The contrasting styles of the chunky SUV and sleek convertible are well-represented in LEGO form, and the double pack format allows for a balanced distribution of parts and an attractive price point. While supercars typically dominate the Speed Champions lineup, this set offers a refreshing deviation, showcasing the versatility of the theme and providing a unique building and display experience. Both models, despite their differences, share a cohesive Mercedes-AMG aesthetic, making them feel right at home together in any lego speed champions mercedes collection.
