Engine Performance: New Heights with 4.0L V8 Biturbo

The heart of the Mercedes Benz E63 S, the versatile AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine, elevates performance to unprecedented levels. It delivers a staggering 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, available across a broad rev range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. This immense power translates to breathtaking acceleration, propelling the sedan from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.3 seconds, with dynamic acceleration continuing until the electronically limited top speed of 186 mph.

This advanced AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine utilizes proven twin-turbocharging technology, with the turbochargers ingeniously positioned not outside the cylinder banks but within the V for a “hot inner V” configuration. This design offers numerous advantages, including a more compact engine footprint, immediate turbocharger response thanks to short gas flow paths, and reduced exhaust gas emissions due to optimized airflow to the close-coupled catalytic converters. For the first time, twin-scroll turbochargers are implemented to further enhance performance and responsiveness. The turbocharger housing is divided into two parallel flow passages, working in concert with two separate exhaust ducts in the exhaust manifold to manage exhaust gases striking the turbine wheel independently. Exhaust gas from cylinders one and four of a cylinder bank are channeled through one duct, while gases from cylinders two and three are directed through the other. This innovative approach minimizes adverse interference between individual cylinders in the exhaust gas cycle, reducing exhaust gas back pressure and improving gas exchange. The result is increased power output through improved cylinder charging, enhanced low-end torque, and instantaneous throttle response.

Further engine enhancements include new pistons, optimized air intake and charge air cooling systems, and extensive software refinements. Features retained from previous iterations include spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, an all-aluminum crankcase, four-valve-per-cylinder design with camshaft adjustment, air-water charge air cooling, alternator management, ECO start/stop function, and gliding mode. Overall, the eight-cylinder engine is engineered to deliver thrilling power and potent acceleration across the entire engine speed range, combined with maximum efficiency for reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

AMG Cylinder Management: Enhanced Efficiency

For optimal fuel efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has equipped the V8 engine in the Mercedes Benz E63 with AMG Cylinder Management, a cylinder deactivation system. This technology, previously demonstrated for its effectiveness in the SLK55, is now applied for the first time in a turbocharged engine from the high-performance AMG brand. In partial-load operation within the “Comfort” transmission mode and across an engine speed range of 1,000 to 3,250 rpm, cylinders two, three, five, and eight are deactivated, significantly reducing fuel consumption.

The AMG main menu within the instrument cluster provides real-time information to the driver, indicating whether the cylinder deactivation system is active and whether the engine is operating in partial or full-load mode. The transition between four and eight-cylinder operation is designed to be seamless and imperceptible, ensuring no compromise in passenger comfort. This smooth transition is facilitated by intelligent interaction between the high-performance engine management system and CAMTRONIC valve lift adjustment, a system with similarities to that used in four-cylinder engines. Eight dual actuators in half-engine mode operate axially sliding cam units on the intake and exhaust camshafts via shift gates. Half-engine operation is achieved by closing the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders two, three, five, and eight. This not only reduces load-change losses in the deactivated cylinders but also increases the efficiency of the remaining four cylinders by shifting their operating point to higher loads.

AMG Performance 4MATIC+: Variable All-Wheel Drive System

The Mercedes Benz E63 S exclusively features the innovative AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. This newly engineered, intelligent system merges the advantages of various drive configurations, offering fully variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles for the first time. This ensures optimum traction right up to the physical limits, providing drivers with confidence and stability under all road conditions, be it dry, wet, or snow-covered. The transition between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive is seamless and virtually undetectable, thanks to intelligent control integrated within the vehicle’s overall system architecture.

An electromechanically controlled coupling variably connects the permanently driven rear axle to the front axle. The system continuously calculates the ideal torque distribution based on driving conditions and driver inputs, enabling the performance sedan to dynamically transition from traction-optimized all-wheel drive to purely rear-wheel drive and anywhere in between. These transitions are seamless and governed by a sophisticated control matrix. Beyond enhancing traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive system also improves longitudinal dynamics, contributing to even more potent acceleration. Importantly, the fully variable torque distribution allows for drift maneuvers. Drift mode, a standard feature on the E63 S, is activated within the “Race” drive program using the shift paddles, provided ESP® is deactivated and the transmission is in manual mode. Once engaged, drift mode transforms the E63 S into a purely rear-wheel drive vehicle, remaining active until manually deactivated by the driver.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-Speed Sport Transmission: Quick Shifts and Efficiency

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT nine-speed sport transmission in the new Mercedes Benz E63 S is specifically calibrated to meet the demands of high-performance driving. This involved significant re-engineering of both hardware and software to achieve optimal performance. Specialized software enables exceptionally rapid shift times, quick multiple downshifts, and a double-clutching function, creating a highly engaging and emotional gear-shifting experience. A wet start-off clutch replaces the traditional torque converter, reducing weight and optimizing responsiveness to accelerator pedal inputs, especially during acceleration and load changes.

AMG DYNAMIC SELECT: Personalized Driving Dynamics

The Mercedes Benz E63 S offers four distinct AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs: “Comfort,” “Sport,” “Sport Plus,” and “Individual,” allowing drivers to extensively tailor the vehicle’s characteristics to their preferences and driving conditions. These programs modify key parameters such as engine response, transmission behavior, suspension settings, steering feel, ESP® intervention, and all-wheel drive system operation. Regardless of the selected DYNAMIC SELECT program, drivers can directly engage manual mode by pressing the “M” button, enabling gear changes solely via the steering wheel shift paddles. Suspension settings can also be independently adjusted.

“Comfort” mode provides a balanced driving experience, prioritizing a comfortable ride with compliant suspension and steering, fuel-efficient powertrain configuration, and early upshifts for smooth gear changes and a subdued engine sound. Cylinder deactivation, ECO start/stop function, and gliding mode are active in this setting. Gliding mode engages when the driver releases the accelerator between 37 and 99 mph, opening the MCT transmission clutch and decoupling the engine from the powertrain. The electronics reduce engine speed to idle, minimizing motion resistance from compression and frictional forces during overrun. “Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes are engineered for heightened vehicle dynamics, featuring an agile accelerator pedal response, direct setup, and emotionally engaging gear shifts with shortened shift times and double-clutching on downshifts. “Sport Plus” mode increases idle speed for particularly rapid starts and faster acceleration from a standstill. The Mercedes Benz E63 S also includes a “RACE” drive program, designed for maximum performance on closed race circuits. In this mode, all parameters are optimized for peak dynamic capability.

RACESTART: Simplified Launch Control

The RACESTART function, designed for optimal launch performance, has been simplified for ease of use. In “Sport,” “Sport Plus,” or “RACE” drive programs, drivers simply need to forcefully depress the brake pedal with their left foot and simultaneously fully depress the accelerator pedal with their right foot. The onboard electronics automatically set the ideal engine speed for launch. If desired, drivers can fine-tune the launch engine speed using the shift paddles to adjust for specific conditions or road surfaces. Releasing the brake pedal initiates launch, and the Mercedes Benz E63 S accelerates from rest with optimal traction, achieving 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds.

Suspension: Engineered for Lateral and Longitudinal Dynamics

The exceptional agility and high cornering speeds of the new Mercedes Benz E63 S are attributed to the completely re-engineered AMG sport suspension. Based on AIR BODY CONTROL fully supporting multi-chamber air suspension, it provides exceptional camber stability, combining precise vehicle dynamics and steering with a high degree of ride comfort. The front axle utilizes a four-link design with forged aluminum components including wishbones, strut rod, and spring link. The suspension strut supports vehicle weight via the supporting link across from the body. Independent wheel control and suspension components, along with increased track width, enable higher lateral acceleration and minimize torque steer.

The rear axle, also entirely re-engineered and model-specific, is tailored to the performance sedan’s enhanced vehicle dynamics. The multi-link concept delivers highly precise wheel control and increased stiffness. The AMG-specific rear axle carrier facilitates the wider track, with wheel bearing contact surfaces moved outwards compared to the standard Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan. Other enhancements include AMG-specific wheel carriers, elastokinematic tuning optimized for vehicle dynamics, and increased negative camber. Newly developed elastokinematics ensure the comfort expected of an E-Class, combined with high precision and dynamic handling. The rear axle differential features a new mount to improve NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics, complemented by additional bracing and welds. An anti-roll bar made of tubular material, similar to that used in the AMG GT R, reduces rear axle weight and is adapted to the increased dynamics of the new performance sedan. Radial brake connections, derived from motorsport, enhance handling agility and precision by increasing rigidity against suspension vibrations and forces. Special rubber bushes on axles and new elastokinematics improve camber stability by 30 percent compared to the previous E63 model.

Three-Chamber Air Suspension: Personalized Ride Experience

The air suspension system, featuring three chambers, a sporty spring damper setup, and continuously adjustable damping, further elevates the personalized driving experience. It seamlessly blends exemplary vehicle dynamics with excellent ride quality and noise isolation. The rigidity of the air springs is finely tunable by activating or deactivating individual air chambers, resulting in tangible improvements in both comfort and handling. AMG engineers have defined three spring tuning settings based on the selected drive program and driving conditions. During sudden load changes, rapid cornering, hard acceleration, or heavy braking, the spring rate automatically stiffens on the front or rear axle to effectively reduce roll and pitching, stabilizing the performance sedan. In “Comfort” mode, the suspension prioritizes ride comfort, effectively absorbing road irregularities for a smooth journey. “Sport” mode provides significantly more dynamic handling with reduced body roll thanks to a firmer spring rate. “Sport Plus” mode further enhances agility and cornering capability with even stiffer front and rear axle suspension. Furthermore, drivers can independently adjust the adaptive damping in three stages – “Comfort,” “Sport,” and “Sport Plus” – to select between relaxed long-distance cruising and maximum sportiness. Rebound and compression levels are adjusted independently, and freely programmable characteristics maps allow for a wide spectrum between minimum and maximum damper force, refining the difference between comfortable and sporty settings and making it more perceptible based on the driving situation. The comprehensive package delivers: the AMG E63 S Sedan combines steering precision and top-tier longitudinal and lateral dynamics with maximum traction, all while enhancing ride comfort.

Rear Differential Lock: Optimal Traction, Track Ready

To maximize traction and vehicle dynamics, the Mercedes Benz E63 S is equipped with an electronically controlled rear differential lock. Both differentials reduce wheel slip on the inside wheel during cornering without engaging the braking system. This enables drivers to accelerate out of corners sooner and with greater power due to improved traction. The car also maintains greater stability during high-speed braking, and the limited-slip differential enhances traction during acceleration. The primary advantage of the electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential is its more sensitive and proactive control, raising performance thresholds and making it easier to drive at the vehicle’s limits. For optimal cooling, the limited-slip differential housing incorporates additional cooling fins. The three-stage ESP® system, offering “ESP ON,” “ESP SPORT Handling Mode,” and “ESP OFF” settings, works in perfect synchronization with the rear-axle limited-slip differential and AMG 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, finely tuned for exceptional dynamics.
