BMW G80 M3 Competition: One Month Owner Review – Living with the Legend

After just over a month of owning the G80 M3 Competition, it’s time to share some initial impressions. As a long-time BMW enthusiast and someone who’s owned several M cars, including E46 M3s, an E36 M3, and an F80 M3 Competition, along with a recent stint in a 991.2 Porsche 911 GTS, I came to the G80 with a solid background for comparison. While a full video review will follow on my YouTube channel soon, here are some key highlights after my first month with the G80 M3.

G80 M3 Competition: The PROS

The G80 M3 Competition immediately impresses with its everyday usability. Getting in and out is effortless, and driving it daily is genuinely comfortable. Aesthetically, the car is stunning. The profile is fantastic, and while the front end design was initially controversial, it has grown on me significantly. It now appears aggressive and perfectly complements the car’s overall sexy, stylish, and luxurious presence.

The technology in the G80 M3 is a major leap forward, especially coming from the 991.2 Porsche. The larger iDrive screen is fantastic, and I appreciate the lighting options and overall system layout. There have been a few minor glitches with the radio and screen responsiveness, but these could be user-related.

Performance-wise, the power is simply incredible. Just when you think the engine might be reaching its limit, it unleashes even more. On straightaways and highways, the G80 M3 is an absolute beast.

The steering is another highlight. While it doesn’t quite match the surgical precision and feedback of the 911 GTS, it’s truly excellent for a car of this size and class. Concerns about numb steering or excessive understeer haven’t materialized in my experience, especially with the Pilot Sport 4S tires. The G80 M3 handles remarkably well for a substantial sedan packing such immense power.

The brakes are exceptionally strong, almost surprisingly so. BMW M brakes have always been impressive, but these feel like they offer an extra level of stopping power.

Overall, the G80 M3 Competition is a fantastic daily driver that provides a tremendous amount of driving pleasure.

G80 M3 Competition: The CONS

Let’s address the elephant in the room – the brake squeal. Having owned multiple M cars, I’m familiar with brake bedding procedures and dust, but the squealing on the G80 M3 is excessive. Despite attempts to resolve it, the noise persists and returns quickly. For a vehicle in this price range, it’s disappointing that BMW hasn’t implemented a brake setup that avoids this common and frankly, embarrassing issue. Switching to aftermarket pads like iSweeps seems like a necessary fix.

Fuel economy is another area for consideration. While not as poor as I recall the V8 M3 being, it’s definitely thirsty. It’s noticeably less fuel-efficient than my previous 911 GTS, perhaps around 20% worse, although this is just an estimation. While expected for a performance car, it’s worth noting.

The transmission, while quick and precise during spirited driving, isn’t as refined as a PDK. There’s noticeable jerkiness, particularly at low speeds when maneuvering in parking lots or in stop-and-go traffic. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it lacks the buttery smoothness of some competitors.

Overall G80 M3 Competition Rating (After 1 Month)

Using a 1-10 scale:

  1. Power/Performance: 9
  2. Styling: 8
  3. Handling: 8
  4. Brakes: 7.5 (potential for 9 without squeal)
  5. Comfort: 8.5
  6. Technology: 8
  7. Efficiency: 6.5
  8. Daily Driver-ability: 9
  9. Passenger Comfort: 9
  10. Smile Factor: 8.5

Overall 1-Month Score: 8.2

Despite minor drawbacks, the G80 M3 Competition is an incredibly enjoyable car. While it might not be the outright sports car that the 911 is, its blend of performance, practicality, and daily driving comfort makes it a truly wonderful machine and a fantastic choice for its intended purpose.
