Parents and caregivers who own a Jeep Liberty stroller, please take note of an important safety recall. Kolcraft Enterprises Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has announced a voluntary recall of certain Jeep Liberty Limited Urban Terrain All Terrain Strollers and Jeep Liberty Sport X Strollers. This recall is due to a potential hazard with the stroller’s wheels that could pose a risk of injury to both children and adults. It is crucial to stop using the recalled strollers immediately and follow the instructions provided by Kolcraft to ensure the safety of your child.
This recall affects approximately 96,000 units in the United States and 510 in Canada. The issue stems from the inner tube of the stroller’s tires, which can rupture. This rupture can cause the wheel rim to fracture and detach forcefully, becoming a projectile hazard. Understanding the details of this Jeep Liberty stroller recall is vital for your family’s safety.
The recall includes specific Jeep Liberty branded strollers with model numbers beginning with JL031, JL032, JL034, JL035, or JL036. These strollers were manufactured between June 2010 and September 2011. To determine if your stroller is affected, check for a white tag located on the rear upper center of the seatback pad. This tag will display the model number and the date of manufacture.
These recalled Jeep Liberty strollers are three-wheeled and were sold in various color combinations. These combinations include:
- Green seat and canopy
- Gray seat and canopy with a teal blue stripe across the center of the canopy
- Orange seat and canopy with a tan stripe
- Tan seat and canopy with a yellow stripe across the center top of the canopy
- Tan seat and canopy with an orange canopy rim
Distinctive “Jeep” branding is present on the side of the stroller and on the front stroller tray. Additionally, the stroller tray features a child’s play steering wheel, ignition key, and shift lever in red, orange, and yellow plastic.
It’s important to note a key identifier for wheels not included in this recall. If your stroller wheels have a gray triangle located on the rim at the valve stem, your stroller wheels are not part of this recall. Carefully examine your Jeep Liberty stroller wheels to confirm whether they are subject to this safety notice.
Kolcraft and the CPSC have received numerous reports related to this issue. There have been 39 reports of inner tube ruptures leading to wheel rim fractures and detachment. Alarmingly, 18 of these incidents resulted in injuries. A significant number of injuries, 14 out of 18, occurred while adult caregivers were inflating the stroller tires. Tragically, two children sustained lacerations, and 16 adults experienced abrasions, contusions, and/or lacerations. Two incidents also included reports of property damage, highlighting the force with which these wheel rims can detach.
These recalled Jeep Liberty strollers were sold at major retailers nationwide, including Burlington Coat Factory, Sears, and Toys R Us. They were also available online and at various mass market and independent juvenile specialty stores. Sales occurred from June 2010 through June 2013, with the strollers priced between $150 and $180.
If you own a recalled Jeep Liberty stroller, you should immediately cease using it. Kolcraft is offering a free replacement wheel kit to remedy this safety concern. To obtain your replacement wheels, contact Kolcraft directly.
When inflating replacement stroller tires or any stroller tires in the future, consumers are strongly advised to use a manual bicycle pump. It is critical to inflate stroller tires to a maximum pressure of 30 p.s.i. Never use gas station air pumps to inflate stroller tires, as these pumps can easily over-inflate the tires, increasing the risk of rupture and injury.
