Unleashing the Beast: First Impressions of the 2024 BMW X3M Competition

For those in the market for a high-performance SUV that blends exhilarating power with everyday practicality, the 2024 Bmw X3m Competition stands out as a top contender. My journey to owning this exceptional vehicle began with a desire for the elusive M3 xDrive wagon, a model sadly unavailable in the US market. This led me to consider the M3 xDrive sedan, but ultimately, my needs pointed towards something more versatile.

I realized my ideal daily driver needed to be more than just a standard car. It had to offer:

  • Thrilling performance and ample power
  • Sufficient space for family and gear for various adventures, from camping to road trips
  • A comfortable, luxurious, and technologically advanced cabin

While the M3 could fulfill some of these requirements, the 2024 BMW X3M emerged as the superior choice for my lifestyle. Learning that the X3M Competition shared the same potent drivetrain as the M3 xDrive piqued my interest, leading me down a rabbit hole of reviews. The consensus was overwhelmingly positive, with the only recurring critique being ride harshness – a characteristic I was already familiar with from previous BMW M models and my recently replaced MINI Clubman JCW. Unfortunately, test driving a 2024 BMW X3M before ordering wasn’t an option.

My local BMW dealership informed me that custom orders for the current generation X3M were ceasing as production shifted to the 2025 model. Fortunately, through their network, I located an in-queue build that matched my desired specifications. The sales representative, an enthusiast himself, skillfully redirected this build to my local dealership without even requiring a deposit, a gesture that truly impressed me. The purchase was finalized with financing, along with the BMW extended warranty and prepaid service, solidifying my intention to keep this vehicle for the long haul.

The Perfect Build: Tailoring My 2024 BMW X3M Competition

The configuration I landed on for my 2024 BMW X3M Competition is, in my opinion, nearly perfect:

  • Exterior Color: Brooklyn Grey – A sophisticated and sporty hue that perfectly complements the X3M’s aggressive lines.
  • Competition Package: Essential for unlocking the full performance potential, enhancing both power and handling.
  • Wheels: 21” V-Spoke 765M wheels – These wheels not only look stunning but also contribute to the vehicle’s dynamic stance.
  • Driving Assistance Pro: A must-have for modern driving, providing advanced safety and convenience features.
  • Executive Package (with Glass Roof Delete): Prioritizing features like heated seats and Harman Kardon sound while opting for a solid roof for personal preference.
  • Remote Engine Start: A welcome convenience, especially in varying climates.
  • M Shadowline Lights: Adding a touch of darkened style to the headlights and taillights.
  • Front Ventilated Seats: Crucial for comfort during warmer weather.
  • Wireless Charging: Keeping the cabin clutter-free and devices powered up.
  • Black Brake Calipers: A subtle yet sporty touch.
  • Space Saver Spare: Peace of mind for longer journeys.

While a custom blue paint might have been a dream, and the 892M competition wheels are also appealing, the chosen build strikes an excellent balance of aesthetics, performance, and practicality.

Early Driving Impressions: A Beast in Refinement

Still diligently observing the break-in period, I’ve had the opportunity to experience the 2024 BMW X3M Competition on some engaging back roads. It’s astonishing how composed and rapid this 4600 lb SUV feels. This is undeniably the largest vehicle I’ve ever owned, yet its agility and responsiveness are remarkable.

  • Quiet Cabin: Road noise is minimal, contributing to a refined driving experience, especially on longer trips.
  • Exceptional Handling: The chassis feels incredibly planted and controlled, inspiring confidence in corners.
  • Communicative Steering: While perhaps slightly insulated, the steering still provides sufficient feedback to understand the limits of grip.
  • Powerful Brakes: The braking system is undeniably robust and confidence-inspiring.
  • Blistering Speed: Even while respecting the break-in period, the sheer pace of the 2024 BMW X3M is evident.
  • Acceptable Synthesized Engine Noise: The amplified engine sound is less intrusive than anticipated and likely to remain enabled.
  • Firm but Comfortable Ride: The ride is undeniably firm, but not jarringly harsh. Comfort mode is perfectly suitable for daily driving, and even Sport/Sport Plus modes remain tolerable for most road conditions.

Overall, my initial impressions of the 2024 BMW X3M Competition are overwhelmingly positive. It delivers on its promise of being a fast, luxurious, and versatile vehicle – an ideal “dad cruiser” that offers exhilarating performance on demand, coupled with comfortable cruising and ample space for passengers and cargo. For my diverse needs, I struggle to imagine a more complete and well-rounded vehicle.

Community Input: Tires and Audio

For fellow 2024 BMW X3M owners, I’m curious about your factory tire selection. My vehicle arrived with Hankook Ventus S1 evo Z tires, which surprisingly offered commendable grip during spirited driving. However, a future switch to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires is likely.

Regarding audio settings, I primarily listen to electronic music and prefer a bass-heavy sound profile. The default stereo settings seem rather flat and mid/treble-focused. While experimentation is planned, I’m sure other owners have already fine-tuned their equalizer settings for optimal bass response. Any recommended EQ settings for electronic music enthusiasts would be greatly appreciated!

Planned Enhancements: Utility and Versatility

Future modifications are planned to further enhance the practicality of my 2024 BMW X3M Competition, including the addition of a hidden hitch and a low-profile black Thule roof rack for added cargo-carrying capability.
