Avalon All-Wheel Drive: Enhanced Grip for Challenging Conditions
The 2021 Avalon marks a historic milestone by introducing its first-ever all-wheel drive option, a feature Toyota anticipates will account for approximately 20 percent of Avalon sales. Available as a standalone option on the XLE and Limited grades, the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system is paired with the 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission. This powertrain configuration, complete with dual exhausts, produces 205 horsepower.
Dynamic Torque Control AWD is engineered to provide effective traction in adverse weather and slippery conditions, while minimizing the typical fuel economy penalty associated with AWD systems. The system can direct up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels in response to initial acceleration or front wheel slippage.
When all-wheel drive is not required, the electromagnetically controlled coupling on the rear drive axle can disengage the propeller shaft to prioritize fuel efficiency. The AWD system is designed to seamlessly re-engage instantly when needed, ensuring operation that is transparent to both the driver and passengers.
The fuel economy for the Avalon AWD is notably efficient, with manufacturer projected EPA-estimated ratings of 25 MPG city, 34 MPG highway, and 28 MPG combined. The suspension tuning, wheels, and tires that distinguish the FWD Avalon model grades are carried over to the AWD versions. Critically, the integration of AWD does not compromise the Avalon’s passenger space, trunk volume, ride comfort, cabin quietness, or overall agility.
The XLE AWD trim gains a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, which is already standard on the Limited grade. The Avalon AWD is exclusively developed for the North American market and is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky.
TRD: Injecting Racing DNA into the Avalon
TRD, an acronym for Toyota Racing Development, initially gained prominence in off-road truck racing before achieving a long history of victories and championships in various motorsports, including rallying, IMSA GTO and GTP road racing, NASCAR, and NHRA Funny Car racing.
