The Toyota 4Runner, especially the 5th generation, is renowned for its ruggedness and off-road capability. However, one common complaint among owners is the dim, amber-colored interior lighting. Many find the factory-installed lights inadequate, making it difficult to see inside the cabin at night. If you’re looking to enhance your 4runner Interior visibility and give it a more modern feel, upgrading to LED interior lights is a straightforward and highly effective DIY project. This guide will walk you through replacing your 4Runner’s interior bulbs with brighter, more efficient LEDs, transforming your 4runner interior into a more welcoming and functional space.
The original incandescent bulbs in the 4Runner interior cast a yellowish, weak light that can feel dated and doesn’t provide optimal illumination. Switching to LED lights offers a significant improvement. LEDs produce a much brighter, whiter light, which drastically enhances visibility inside the cabin. They also consume less power and have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs, making them a smart and sustainable upgrade for your 4runner interior.
This guide is based on a popular LED upgrade kit featuring 9 bulbs, designed to replace the map lights, lower door lights, dome light, and rear door dome lights in a 5th generation 4Runner. While specific kits may vary, the general process remains similar. Let’s dive into the step-by-step process of upgrading each type of light in your 4runner interior.
Replacing the Lower Door Lights in Your 4Runner Interior
The lower door lights in the 4Runner are a nice feature, but their dim output often renders them almost invisible. Upgrading these to LEDs makes a noticeable difference, improving safety and convenience, especially when entering or exiting your vehicle in low-light conditions. Here’s how to replace them:
First, you’ll need to access the light assembly. For this, you can use an interior trim removal tool, or carefully use a small flathead screwdriver. Insert the tool into the right side middle part of the light lens.
Gently pry outwards. The assembly should pop loose from the door panel.
Once loose, disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the light assembly.
With the assembly removed and disconnected, locate a small tab on the side of the light housing. Pry this tab upwards and slide the grey part of the assembly away from the clear lens cover to separate them.
Carefully remove the grey hood or reflector. This will expose the factory bulb.
Pull out the old bulb and insert the new LED bulb.
Crucially, before reassembling, reconnect the power connector to the light assembly and test the LED. LEDs are polarity sensitive, meaning they only work in one direction. If the LED doesn’t light up, remove it, rotate it 180 degrees, and reinsert it. It should now illuminate. Testing at this stage saves you the hassle of re-disassembling later.
If the LED works, reattach the grey hood onto the assembly.
Then, snap the clear lens cover back onto the assembly.
Reconnect the power cable to the assembly. To reinstall, first insert the left side of the assembly back into the door panel, then push the right side until it pops securely into place. Repeat this process for the remaining three door lights. Once you’ve done one, the rest become much quicker – you’ll be upgrading each door light in just a couple of minutes.
Upgrading the Rear Door Dome Lights in Your 4Runner Interior
Next, let’s tackle the rear door dome lights. These lights, located in the cargo area doors, are also easy to upgrade and contribute to a more brightly lit 4runner interior. The process is similar for both the driver and passenger side rear doors.
To remove the rear door dome light, use your trim tool or a small screwdriver and gently pry upwards on the driver’s side edge of the light housing. You’ll be pushing back a metal clip that secures the light.
Once one side is released, the light assembly will slide out and hang by its power cable.
Carefully detach the clear cover from the light housing. It’s held in place by four small tabs around the edge. Be gentle as these tabs can be fragile. With the cover off, you’ll see the bulb. It’s held in place at two points, one of which is flexible. Usually, the flexible tab is on the bottom of the light. Push down on this tab to release the bulb.
Insert the LED replacement bulb, making sure the LEDs are facing outwards to maximize light output. Test the LED by turning the light switch to the “on” position. If it lights up, reattach the clear cover. Reinsert the power cable side of the assembly first into the door panel, then push the side with the metal clip back until it snaps into place. Repeat for the other rear door dome light.
Replacing the Interior Dome Light in the 4Runner
The main interior dome light is centrally located in the 4runner interior roof and provides general cabin illumination. Upgrading this light significantly boosts overall brightness inside your 4Runner. For this light, you only need to remove the lens cover; the light assembly itself stays mounted. Locate the two slots on the side of the cover facing the front of the 4Runner, near the light switch. Insert your trim tool or screwdriver into these slots to gently pry off the cover.
Inside, you’ll find the bulb, held in place by a flexible metal tab, similar to the rear door dome lights. It can be a bit tight to access, especially if you have larger hands. Take your time to carefully remove the old bulb and insert the LED replacement. Test the LED before reassembling. If it works, simply snap the cover back into place.
Upgrading the Map Lights in Your 4Runner Interior
Finally, we come to the map lights, located in the overhead console. These can be a bit trickier than the other lights due to limited access, but the increased brightness they provide makes the effort worthwhile. Start by using your trim tool or screwdriver to pry down the edge of the map light console closest to you (towards the rear of the vehicle).
This will release a small portion of the console.
Ideally, in a design-friendly world, you might be able to reach up and pull the bulbs out directly. However, access is usually very restricted. Attempting to use pliers or tape to remove the bulbs in place can be frustrating. The easiest and most effective method is to remove the upper console entirely.
Start by prying down on the windshield side of the crawl control switch panel. There are usually two openings designed for prying. Apply gentle, even pressure.
The crawl control switch panel will pop down. Disconnect the electrical connector and set the panel aside.
In the opening where the crawl control panel was, you’ll find two bolts (often 8mm). Remove these bolts.
Now, gently pull down on the overhead console. It’s held in place by two clips. Disengage these clips, being careful not to force anything excessively, as there’s still a cable attached you don’t want to damage. With the console loose, you’ll have much better access to the map light bulbs.
On the back of the map light assembly, locate the black bulb holders. Turn each holder about a half turn to release it, and the bulb will come out with the holder.
Insert the LED bulbs into the holders. Again, test them before reassembly! Once you’ve confirmed they work, reinstall the upper console by reversing the removal process. Reconnect the cable, align the console, and push it back into place until the clips engage. Reinstall the bolts and then snap the crawl control switch panel back in.

With all the interior lights upgraded to LEDs, you’ll immediately notice a significant improvement in the brightness and clarity of your 4runner interior lighting. The crisp, white light transforms the cabin, making it feel more modern and much more functional at night.
