After a period of anticipation and careful planning, I’m thrilled to share my experience of finally getting behind the wheel of a brand new BMW. Having previously enjoyed a 2013 328i, I knew my next car had to be a Bimmer, but life had even better plans in store. A relocation to Germany for a three-year military assignment presented an unexpected opportunity. Initially, the plan was to replace my sold F30 shortly after settling in. However, as things unfolded, the possibility of upgrading to a more powerful 335i emerged, and then, the even more enticing prospect of waiting a little longer for the coveted 340i Bmw became a reality.
The decision was made. I exercised patience, resisting the urge to immediately replace my car, and relied on my wife’s Honda CR-V for ten months. This period of automotive abstinence was all in the name of acquiring the 340i BMW. Now, I can proudly say that I am likely among the first private owners globally to have a production model 2016 340i BMW parked in my driveway. Following an exhilarating initial 60 miles on the German Autobahn, my satisfaction is absolute!

First Impressions: A Detailed Look at the 340i BMW
Stepping into the dealership, my eyes were immediately drawn to it – the 340i BMW. The unique Orbit Gray 398 wheels, exclusive to the 2016 F30, made identification effortless. My primary focus was to assess the wheel’s shade, a detail that had piqued considerable interest for many, including myself.
BIMMERPOST
I was delighted to find that the Orbit Gray wheels perfectly complement the Mineral Gray paint. They strike a perfect balance, residing midway between the black wheels depicted in the ordering guide and those previously featured on the 435i ZHP. I find the color exceptionally appealing, adding an edgy touch without being overtly black. They promise to effectively conceal brake dust while retaining a factory-fresh aesthetic.
Moving to the interior of the 340i BMW, the oyster gray stitching and accents within the black Dakota Leather are a standout feature. This subtle contrast elevates the cabin’s ambiance, lending a touch of sophistication. The anthracite headliner and pillars further enhance the premium feel. Moreover, the Harmon Kardon sound system represents a significant leap in audio quality compared to the hi-fi system in my previous BMW.
The Thrill of Driving the 340i BMW: Performance and Handling
The moment I ignited the engine, the auditory experience was nothing short of magnificent. While it may not possess the aggressive roar of an M3, the 340i BMW‘s engine note is a substantial improvement over my former 2013 328i. The 328i, despite its merits, emitted a diesel-like sound that was somewhat off-putting. It was akin to a disconnect between visual appeal and auditory delivery. In contrast, the B58 engine of the 340i BMW produces a subtle, pleasing grumble that evolves into a refined purr.
Now, let’s delve into the driving dynamics and suspension of the 340i BMW. Coming from a base 2013 328i, the M-Sport equipped 340i BMW with the Track Package is a revelation. While direct comparison to pre-LCI 704 or DHP suspension isn’t possible due to lack of personal experience, the new suspension system evokes memories of driving a 2010 Mini Cooper S – agile, planted, but with the added benefit of wider stance and superior tires. The PSS tires inspire immense confidence, providing exceptional grip.
Experimenting with driving modes – Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ – revealed distinct differences even in straight-line driving. Eco and Comfort modes delivered a smooth, refined ride, ideal for everyday cruising. Switching to Sport mode sharpened the experience considerably. Subtle road imperfections became perceptible through the steering wheel and seat, indicating a noticeable stiffening of the suspension and enhanced feedback. While I haven’t yet explored the car’s limits in truly demanding corners or exceeded 4500 RPM during this initial period, navigating roundabouts provided an early indication of body roll characteristics. Sport mode effectively eliminated body roll, while Eco mode allowed for a slight degree of lean. The adjustable suspension promises to be a valuable asset for long journeys, allowing for a more relaxed ride when desired. Sport+ mode primarily seemed to alter the DSC settings, which I opted to keep engaged for now.
The Nürburgring beckons. Located just a short drive away, a track day for the 340i BMW is inevitable. DSC will remain active for that adventure.
Contrary to criticisms of pre-LCI BMW suspension being overly “floaty,” the 340i BMW‘s setup provides a palpable connection to the road. Steering feedback is excellent, transmitting the nuances of tire grip effectively.
Variable steering is the one aspect that introduces a slightly artificial feel. The system’s adjustments to steering ratio are noticeable and, while functionally efficient, impart a somewhat electric sensation. However, based on others’ experiences, I anticipate acclimating to and eventually appreciating this technology in the 340i BMW.
The M-Sport brakes are truly impressive. They operate silently, without any squealing, and deliver substantial stopping power even with moderate pedal pressure. Their responsiveness and robust feel are immediately apparent, promising confident braking performance.
Electronics and Practicality in the 340i BMW
Regarding electronics, I opted against the Tech Package, preferring to utilize my smartphone for navigation and infotainment. A Proclip mount with an iOauto magnetic holder securely positions my iPhone 6+, perfectly meeting my needs.
Importantly, even without the Tech Package or 6NS, Siri activation is possible via a long press of the voice command button. Coupled with Apple Music, this provides seamless access to a vast music library and on-demand radio stations, satisfying my entertainment requirements in the 340i BMW.
The side, top view, and rearview cameras function as expected, mirroring previous BMW implementations. Their utility was immediately proven in a tight parking situation, where the visual aids and parking sensors proved invaluable in safeguarding the new bumpers.
Now, the forum is open for your questions! I’ll endeavor to address any inquiries and provide additional pictures of my 340i BMW when daylight permits. My initial experience with the 340i BMW has been overwhelmingly positive, and I eagerly anticipate countless miles of driving pleasure.
