2020 Veloster N: Still the King of Fun Hot Hatches One Year Later?

Continuing our exploration of high-performance hot hatchbacks that deliver exceptional value, we recently revisited the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N. This revisit comes approximately a year after our in-depth review of the 2019 model, allowing us to assess its enduring appeal and performance in the context of a changing automotive landscape.

While the 2020 Veloster N remains fundamentally unchanged from its 2019 predecessor in terms of its distinctive four-door-hatch body style and core mechanics, the opportunity to drive it again arose when we contacted Hyundai PR to inquire about current press vehicle availability in Southern California. Their response, “Would you like the Veloster N… again?”, was met with an enthusiastic yes. Beyond simply enjoying another stint in this thrilling machine, we also aimed to capture it on video for our YouTube channel, something we missed during our initial review. You can see our recently released video below to get a more dynamic perspective.

Despite the lack of significant updates for the 2020 model year, our renewed experience with the Veloster N, especially after driving a diverse range of performance vehicles throughout 2020, sparked fresh insights and reflections.

One aspect that immediately reaffirmed its brilliance was the Veloster N’s steering, handling, and braking prowess. Engaging N mode or Sport mode sharpens all responses, creating a remarkably precise and engaging experience when tackling winding canyon roads. While N mode can be intensely sharp, we quickly dialed in the N Custom mode, allowing us to maximize performance settings while softening the suspension to Sport for optimal road compliance. Grip levels remained exceptional, inspiring confidence even on challenging off-camber corners. With traction control disengaged, the combination of the limited-slip differential and the bespoke Pirelli P Zero tires ensured remarkable composure, rewarding skillful steering and precise throttle and brake inputs. The inherent advantages of a well-engineered front-wheel-drive chassis were amplified: sharp turn-in under braking, playful rear-end rotation with throttle lift, and a planted feel through both tight corners and sweeping bends.

The powertrain of the 2020 Veloster N also continued to impress. Its power delivery felt even more potent than the official 275 horsepower figure would suggest, emanating from the robust dual exhaust outlets. Considering Hyundai N’s lineage with ex-BMW M engineers, we speculated whether they might be employing BMW’s historical practice of understating horsepower figures, or perhaps quoting wheel horsepower instead of crankshaft horsepower. Regardless of the technicalities, the engine’s energetic power curve and high-revving nature consistently elicited smiles. Pushing the engine to its redline and enjoying the raucous symphony of the factory exhaust – a blend of screams, crackles, and pops – transformed mundane Orange County streets into exhilarating driving environments, leaving us yearning for an extended test period.

A standout feature that became particularly noticeable during this second encounter was the Veloster N’s surprisingly spacious and accommodating interior, especially for taller drivers. Compared to many other performance cars, excluding models like the F80 BMW M3 or Honda Civic Type R, the headroom in the Veloster N is exceptional. This 6’3” author found ample headroom even with an Arai helmet, requiring minimal seat adjustment. While the rear seats might be less generous in space, for many enthusiasts, this is a secondary concern. Folding down the 60/40 split rear seats creates a cavernous cargo area, easily accommodating a set of track wheels, a jack, and a container of track day essentials.

In terms of interior amenities, the 2020 Veloster N does forego some of the advanced convenience and driver-assistance technologies such as lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and radar cruise control. However, considering its sub-$30,000 MSRP – with even more attractive deals often available, even for models equipped with the Performance Package – these omissions are hardly deal-breakers. Especially with rumors of a refresh for the 2021 model year circulating, the 2020 Veloster N remains an undeniable bargain in the performance car segment.

The 2020 Veloster N unequivocally remains a thrilling and versatile hot hatch, firmly holding its position as a top recommendation for drivers seeking a fun and capable all-rounder. While its primary competitor, the 2020 Honda Civic Type R, offers a sharper, more refined, and technically superior driving experience with enhanced grip and acceleration, the Veloster N possesses a unique character and attitude that sets it apart. The roughly $8,000 price difference to the Civic Type R is understandable when dissecting the specifications, but from a purely subjective fun-to-drive perspective, the Veloster N delivers an incredibly compelling package. Choosing between the two for personal ownership would be a genuinely challenging decision – perhaps the ideal solution would be to own both.
