For any true auto enthusiast, the allure of a pure driving machine is irresistible. Like many, I’ve navigated the exciting yet sometimes overwhelming landscape of performance BMWs. After careful consideration, pitting the coveted M2 CS against the formidable M2 Competition, and meticulously evaluating cost versus return on investment, I made my decision. The M2 CS, while exceptional, proved elusive, and frankly, the 2021 Bmw M2 Competition stands tall as a phenomenal vehicle in its own right. This realization led me to my trusted dealer, and after a brief wait, I secured an allocation for this German marvel.
My journey with BMW spans 47 years, filled with remarkable cars. My past favorites include an E30 M3 and an E46 M3, each holding a special place in my automotive heart. Life’s phases shifted, bringing family and career priorities, leading me to a 2019 X4 M Sport 40i. It was a capable and stylish vehicle, but its size and weight left me yearning for a more connected, agile driving experience.
The 2021 BMW M2 Competition emerged as the perfect answer to reignite my passion for a genuine “M” car. I briefly entertained the idea of the new G80 M3, but it didn’t resonate with my personal concept of an “M sport” vehicle. The G80, with its polarizing front-end design and technology-laden interior, felt like a departure. While undeniably advanced, it seemed to lean more towards a digital experience than a raw, visceral driving engagement. For me, the G80 felt “too much,” while I acknowledge its appeal to a different demographic.
My vision for this 2021 BMW M2 Competition is clear: it will serve as my spirited daily driver, ready to carve through winding roads and, eventually, see some track time. I envision exhilarating drives through the Pacific Northwest, embracing its scenic routes. It will join my cherished 2002 BMW E36/7 M Roadster (boasting the S54 engine, a wedding gift for my wife) and our practical 2021 i3s REX.
Here’s the configuration I meticulously crafted for my 2021 M2 Competition:
- Model: 2021 M2 Competition
- Exterior Color: Alpine White
- Wheels: 19-inch M Y-Spoke forged black wheels (788M)
- Interior: Black Dakota Leather with Blue Stitching
- Trim: Carbon Fiber Trim
- Packages: Executive Package
To further enhance the performance and aesthetics, I opted for a suite of BMW M Performance parts:
- 0ZGX: Performance Drive Analyzer
- 0Z09: Carbon Fiber Rear Spoiler
- OZ18: Carbon Fiber Interior Trim
- 0Z2Q: Carbon Fiber & Alcantara Trim
- OZ4G: Carbon Fiber Rear Diffuser
- OZ6M: Carbon Fiber Exhaust Tips
- OZ02: Carbon Fiber Side Skirt Winglets
- OZ21: Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps
- 0ZP7: Carbon Fiber Front Splitter
- 0ZW1: Carbon Fiber Side Grills
Like many M2 enthusiasts, I’ve explored the discussions around upgrading the M2 Competition to approach the M2 CS’s heightened performance. Articles like this insightful piece from BMW Blog serve as excellent resources for understanding potential modifications.
Currently, I’m contemplating the M Performance 2-way coil-over suspension. While the performance benefits are undeniable, especially considering the suspension is a key differentiator in the M2 CS, I’m weighing the shorter lifespan of performance dampers against the appeal of maintaining the factory warranty. This decision requires careful consideration, especially as I plan to put some miles on the car before any track excursions.
Another area of consideration is the wheels. While the stock 788M forged wheels are technically excellent – lightweight and designed specifically for the car – the allure of the 763M wheels is strong. Aesthetically, the 763M wheels are, to my eye, significantly more appealing. If I were to make a change, it would be purely for visual preference, and I’d likely pair them with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Selling the practically new 788M wheel and tire set could offset some of the cost, but the overall expense of upgrading to 763M wheels and tires is substantial. The quest for the perfect wheel remains an ongoing deliberation.
This marks the beginning of my journey with the 2021 BMW M2 Competition. I’m eager to connect with fellow BMW enthusiasts, particularly those in Southern California and the Pacific Northwest. I’m also actively seeking recommendations for reputable shops specializing in BMW M car suspension, alignment, and aftermarket enhancements. Any insights or suggestions regarding the modifications I’m considering would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for joining me on this exciting ride!
