2019 Buick Envision AWD Review: Comfort and Capability on Ice

The 2019 Buick Envision AWD, particularly the Premium II package, proved to be a comfortable and surprisingly capable vehicle during the 2019 Rocky Mountain Redline Ice Driving Encounter. This event, held in the snowy landscapes of Winter Park and Georgetown, Colorado, brought together automotive journalists and manufacturers to test all-wheel-drive vehicles in challenging winter conditions.

While my expectations were initially modest, especially after a previous experience with the less powerful 2.5-liter version, the turbocharged Envision AWD quickly changed my perspective. The 2.0-liter turbo engine delivers a robust 252 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm, providing ample power and excellent torque for a compact crossover. This powertrain upgrade makes a significant difference in the driving experience.

Although not as overtly sporty as some performance-oriented crossovers like the Acura RDX A-Spec or Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, the 2019 Buick Envision AWD impressed with its composed ride across various surfaces. The interior prioritizes passenger comfort, creating a refined cabin environment. While the engine noise becomes noticeable at higher revolutions, it wasn’t overly intrusive.

During the ice driving portion of the event, the rear seats of the 2019 Buick Envision AWD offered a welcome retreat. Heated rear outboard seats and an easily accessible Wi-Fi system made it a comfortable space to observe the challenging driving conditions outside, where wind gusts exceeded 60 mph.

Driving Performance and Handling

The standout feature of the 2019 Buick Envision AWD is undoubtedly its turbocharged engine. The power delivery is substantial even at lower speeds, and the peak torque at 3,000 rpm allows for brisk acceleration from a standstill. The vehicle handles adequately at slower speeds, though it exhibits some body roll when pushed harder in corners.

The steering feel is somewhat vague, which is typical for vehicles in this class not specifically designed for performance driving. However, the brakes performed well, providing confident stopping power even on snow and ice. It’s worth noting that all vehicles at the event were equipped with snow tires, but the Buick’s braking remained predictable and reliable.

The 2019 Buick Envision AWD keeps its driving systems straightforward. It lacks selectable multi-terrain modes or customizable driver settings beyond standard traction control on/off. This Buick is engineered for comfortable and capable cruising rather than high-performance driving dynamics.

In snowy and icy conditions, the vehicle’s behavior is clearly defined by its electronic stability program. With traction control enabled, the system intervenes noticeably to maintain directional stability, sometimes cutting power and engaging the ABS. Disabling the stability systems transforms the Envision into a more unrestrained vehicle, allowing for more wheel slip and a less controlled driving experience, which might be entertaining for experienced drivers in a closed course environment.

While deactivating the traction control might offer a more engaging experience for seasoned automotive journalists in specific situations, it doesn’t fundamentally enhance the vehicle’s overall performance.

The 2019 Buick Envision AWD presents itself as a compelling alternative to vehicles like the Lexus NX, appealing to buyers prioritizing comfort and a relaxed driving experience. However, the as-tested price of $49,925 for the fully-loaded Premium II package might be considered a bit high by some. Conversely, the starting price of $44,795 for the 2019 Buick Envision AWD with the Premium Package II (excluding additional extras) appears to be a more appropriate value proposition for this comfortable and refined crossover.
