All-New Four-Cylinder Ingenium Powertrain Details
Jaguar broadened the appeal of the 2018 Jaguar F-TYPE by introducing an all-new 2.0-liter 296hp turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium engine. This marked a significant expansion of the powertrain lineup, offering a new entry point into the F-TYPE range.
The powerful all-aluminum Ingenium gasoline engine is designed to be a perfect match for the all-aluminum F-TYPE chassis. It expanded the powertrain options from a 296hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder to the range-topping 575hp supercharged 5.0-liter V8, providing a spectrum of performance options unmatched in the sports car segment.
Similar to the supercharged six- and eight-cylinder engines, the turbocharged Ingenium four-cylinder engine is engineered to deliver the driving experience expected from the award-winning F-TYPE design, while establishing its own distinct character.
The new model retains the performance DNA of the F-TYPE. The new powertrain enables the F-TYPE to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.4 seconds and achieve a top speed of 155mph (where legally permissible). The turbocharged engine’s high maximum torque of 295 lb-ft, generated from just 1,500rpm, combined with the eight-speed Quickshift transmission, results in exceptional responsiveness across the rev range.
“The 296hp Ingenium petrol engine is engineered to deliver a compelling combination of performance, refinement, and efficiency. Cutting-edge technologies, including electrohydraulic intake valve lift control, an integrated exhaust manifold, and a twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings, make this the most advanced petrol engine we’ve ever produced,” stated Ron Lee, Engineering Director of Powertrain at Jaguar Land Rover. “This engine is not only the most powerful four-cylinder ever offered in a production Jaguar, but it also develops the highest specific power and torque ratings of any engine in the F-TYPE range. It is a natural fit for a Jaguar sports car.”
A key technology within the Ingenium engine is the electrohydraulic valvetrain, neatly integrated into the cylinder head. This system uses patented control algorithms developed in-house to enable fully variable control of intake valve lift. This precise control optimizes combustion efficiency, power output, and torque delivery throughout the engine’s operating range.
Unlike traditional gasoline engines that rely on a throttle valve for load control, the Ingenium gasoline engine primarily manages load through the intake valves themselves. This is achieved by varying the amount of valve lift and the duration for which the valves are open. Instead of direct cam operation, the intake cams actuate compact hydraulic pumps via low-friction roller finger followers. The oil pressure generated by these pumps is then used to open and close the intake valves.
Each pump is controlled by a solenoid valve, managed by sophisticated software. When the solenoids are fully open, there is no valve lift. When closed, full lift is achieved. By varying the solenoid state, the system delivers fully variable valve lift – from 0 to 11mm – optimizing intake airflow across the engine’s entire operating range.
The 2.0-liter Ingenium gas engine’s electrohydraulic technology is capable of cycle-by-cycle control of the combustion process. Combined with phasers on both intake and exhaust cams, this system offers exceptional flexibility in engine management.
Late intake valve opening is utilized during engine start-up. The combination of low valve lift and short duration provides precise control over the exact amount of air required, especially during cold starts, improving efficiency and emissions.
At very low speeds and loads, the valvetrain’s flexibility enables a composite mode – a combination of early intake valve closing and late intake valve opening. This strategy enhances charge motion, leading to more complete and efficient combustion, thus reducing emissions.
Under part-load conditions, such as low-speed urban driving or highway cruising, the valvetrain employs an early intake valve closing strategy combined with later exhaust valve opening. This optimized combustion efficiency is achieved due to the increased expansion ratio. Dual independent cam phasing allows for optimal residual gas control with minimal frictional losses. The combination of turbocharging and a highly efficient water-to-air cooler ensures high intake air charge density, maintaining torque output and ensuring immediate engine response to driver inputs.
Under full load, the system delivers full valve lift and longer duration, combined with an earlier exhaust valve opening. This maximizes airflow, enabling the engine to deliver its full performance potential.
Advanced Turbocharger Technology
In a first for Jaguar Land Rover, the exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head casting. Coolant circulating through ducts in the manifold reduces warm-up times, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and improved emissions. The integrated exhaust manifold also helps to lower maximum exhaust gas temperatures, reducing the need for fuel enrichment at high loads, further enhancing efficiency.
The manifold is precisely matched to a twin-scroll turbocharger. For maximum efficiency, the duct within the water-cooled turbine housing is divided into two, with one fed by exhaust gas from cylinders one and three, and the other by cylinders two and four. This configuration prevents exhaust gas pulsation interference, enabling the turbine wheel to respond more rapidly. Boost pressure is delivered almost instantaneously, minimizing turbo lag and providing the throttle responsiveness characteristic of the F-TYPE driving experience.
To ensure optimal launch performance and transient response while still enabling the engine to develop its high peak power output, the turbocharger features ceramic ball bearings – another first for a Jaguar Land Rover gasoline engine. Ceramic ball bearings offer the lowest possible bearing friction, especially during cold starts, further enhancing responsiveness.
The Ingenium engine also incorporates a new 200bar direct injection system with centrally-mounted injectors. Combined with optimized spray patterns, this configuration minimizes fuel impingement on the cylinder walls and piston crown, improving combustion efficiency and fuel economy.
The inlet ports are designed to generate high levels of charge motion, which, along with enhancements to the direct injection system, further reduces wall wetting and promotes better mixing of fuel and air for more efficient combustion.
All Ingenium engines are designed to achieve benchmark low levels of friction, contributing to inherently good performance and refinement. Design features contributing to this include cylinder bores offset by 12mm to reduce tangential forces on the cylinder walls, and needle roller bearings for the twin balancer shafts and camshafts.
The map-controlled oil pump regulates flow rate based on engine speed, load, and temperature. Switchable piston cooling jets only spray oil onto the underside of the piston crowns when needed, further reducing load on the lubrication system and enhancing efficiency.
The split cooling system with a map-controlled electric coolant pump ensures rapid engine warm-up by circulating coolant through the block only once the engine reaches operating temperature. In addition to reducing fuel consumption, this also improves passenger comfort by enabling the heater to warm the cabin more quickly.
Chassis Dynamics
From its inception, the F-TYPE was engineered to deliver exceptional agility and responsiveness without compromising the everyday usability and ride comfort expected of a Jaguar.
The stiff, lightweight aluminum body structure and all-round aluminum double wishbone suspension have always been fundamental to achieving this duality of character. For the 2018 model year, the development team meticulously tuned the chassis to fully capitalize on the weight savings offered by the new four-cylinder engine.
“We aimed to ensure that the power and efficiency of the new four-cylinder engine were complemented by levels of responsiveness that would make the F-TYPE driving experience even more engaging and rewarding,” stated Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar Land Rover. “The result of this intensive development process is an even better balance, a more connected feel, and enhanced ride comfort. Driving enthusiasts will truly appreciate this car: it is a true F-TYPE, with its own unique character.”
Weighing 114.6 lbs (52kg) less than the equivalent model powered by the 340hp supercharged 3.0-liter gas V6, the four-cylinder F-TYPE is the lightest in the range. The majority of this weight reduction is concentrated over the front axle, providing maximum benefits to vehicle dynamics and improving weight distribution. The weight balance shifts by one percentage point towards the rear, further enhancing agility.
To optimize handling and ride comfort in light of the weight reduction, the front and rear spring rates have been reduced by four and three percent, respectively. The valving of the monotube dampers incorporates learnings from the F-TYPE SVR program. Meticulous tuning of the dampers in the SVR program helped achieve enhanced ride comfort while maintaining the desired handling characteristics, and these principles were applied to the four-cylinder model.
The electric power-assisted steering system in the F-TYPE also features a unique calibration specifically for the four-cylinder model. This calibration is designed to extract the full benefit of the weight savings and deliver improved tactility and feedback to the driver. Combined with the Torque Vectoring by Braking (TVbB) system – which applies precisely controlled braking to the inner wheels during cornering to mitigate understeer – these chassis changes make the F-TYPE even more engaging and enjoyable to drive, offering enhanced agility and responsiveness.
The entry-level Ingenium four-cylinder models are equipped as standard with new, lightweight 18-inch wheels. These wheels are fitted with 245/45/R18 tires at the front axle and 275/40/R18 tires at the rear. These lighter wheels and tires contribute to reducing unsprung mass, further improving responsiveness and control. All four-cylinder F-TYPE models can be specified with a range of optional 19- and 20-inch wheel designs, allowing for customization of both aesthetics and handling characteristics.
As standard, the braking system on all four-cylinder models features 355mm front and 325mm rear discs, providing impressive stopping power and ensuring confident braking performance.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Available from later in the 2018 model year, the F-TYPE incorporated a forward-facing stereo camera, serving as the foundation for new advanced driver assistance systems. One key feature enabled by this camera is the Emergency Braking system. If the system detects an imminent collision with a vehicle ahead, it is designed to automatically initiate full braking. This intervention aims to help avoid a collision or mitigate its severity, enhancing safety in emergency situations.
The stereo camera also provides the intelligence for the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) systems. By monitoring the vehicle’s position relative to lane markings, LDW is designed to help prevent unintentional lane departures. It triggers a visual warning in the instrument cluster and a haptic warning through the steering wheel rim to alert the driver.
LKA builds upon LDW, providing a more active level of assistance. It is designed to guide the driver back towards the center of their lane by applying subtle counter-steering inputs through the electric power-assisted steering system. The steering torque applied by LKA is designed to be easily overridden, making the system intuitive and non-intrusive in operation, while still providing valuable assistance in maintaining lane position.
The Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) system utilizes the stereo camera to keep the driver informed of prevailing speed limits. This includes permanent limits, temporary limits (such as those in construction zones), and variable limits used on some highways. The recognized speed limit is displayed in the instrument cluster, and camera data is cross-referenced with GPS data for maximum accuracy and reliability.
Further driver support is provided by the Adaptive Speed Limiter (ASL). This intelligent system uses data from the TSR system to adjust the vehicle’s set speed. It can automatically increase or decrease the maximum vehicle speed while the accelerator pedal is depressed, based on recognized speed limit changes. If the TSR system recognizes a higher speed limit ahead, ASL notifies the driver and can smoothly accelerate the vehicle up to the new limit. Conversely, if a lower speed limit is detected, the vehicle can coast down accordingly, helping drivers remain compliant with speed regulations.
Driver fatigue is a significant factor in lane drifting. The available Driver Condition Monitor system is designed to recognize driving patterns indicative of fatigue. These patterns include periods of minimal steering activity followed by sudden or excessive steering inputs. When such patterns are detected, the system can display a multi-stage warning in the instrument cluster and provide audible alerts, prompting the driver to take a break and prevent drowsy driving incidents.
