2006 Mercedes-Benz C230: Owner Concerns – Transmission Roughness and Engine Noise

I recently purchased a 2006 Mercedes-Benz C230 and am seeking advice regarding some concerning issues. Having bought this black on black C230 with relatively low mileage (59k) in April, I opted for the peace of mind of a one-year warranty. However, shortly after the purchase, I began noticing some irregularities, specifically with the transmission.

The transmission seems to exhibit rough shifting, particularly when decelerating and coming to a stop. This issue is significant enough that it feels like the engine is being bogged down, to the point where a friend even questioned if the parking brake was engaged while driving. It’s worth noting that the vehicle had recently undergone a full service at Mercedes-Benz of Fairfax, VA prior to my purchase.

Seeking further clarification, I took the 2006 C230 to my local Mercedes-Benz dealer for a comprehensive health check. I specifically highlighted the transmission concerns, as well as a low-end engine noise that is noticeable upon initial cold starts. Despite these concerns and a paid inspection service, the dealership reported a clean bill of health for the vehicle. However, I am skeptical that a thorough road test or cold start evaluation was actually performed during their inspection.

This transmission issue is detracting from the overall enjoyment of what is otherwise a pleasurable car to drive. My primary concern now is the potential for significant future repairs, encompassing both the transmission and possible engine issues. If these problems are indicative of larger underlying problems, I am considering trading in the C230 while it is still covered under warranty to mitigate potential out-of-pocket expenses.

This purchase was somewhat impulsive, deviating from my usual practice of extensive pre-purchase research. My previous Mercedes-Benz, a 1997 E320, was a testament to the brand’s prior reputation for robust build quality. It seems the build quality and reliability may have shifted over time. I am hoping to determine if my 2006 C230 falls within any known affected range for engine or transmission problems and would greatly appreciate it if someone with access to Mercedes-Benz VIN databases could check my VIN: wdbrf52h56f729170. Any insights or advice regarding these 2006 Mercedes C230 issues would be greatly appreciated.
