Maintaining your 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor is crucial for its longevity and performance. One of the essential maintenance tasks is replacing the spark plugs. While it might seem daunting, changing spark plugs on your Mercedes C230 Kompressor can be a straightforward DIY job with the right tools and guidance. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough for replacing the spark plugs on your 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor equipped with the M271 engine.
Disclaimer: Before we begin, it’s important to understand that this guide is for informational purposes only. While I am sharing my experience as a fellow car enthusiast working on my 2005 C230 Kompressor, I am not a professional mechanic. Automotive maintenance should ideally be performed by trained and experienced professionals. Incorrect procedures can lead to personal injury, damage to your vehicle, or tool malfunction. Always exercise caution and prioritize safety. This guide is specific to the 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor with the M271 engine, and procedures may vary for other models or model years. You are responsible for your own safety and the proper maintenance of your vehicle.
Here’s what you’ll need to get started with your 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor spark plug replacement:
- ¼” ratchet and sockets
- Nutdriver that uses ¼” sockets
- 3/8” ratchet
- Extensions (various lengths can be helpful)
- 5/8” spark plug socket (specifically designed to grip spark plugs)
- E8 star socket (part of a star socket set, readily available at auto parts stores)
- 4 new Bosch spark plugs, FR6332 (or equivalent as specified in your Mercedes C230 Kompressor owner’s manual). These can be ordered online; local auto parts stores may not always stock this specific plug.
- Torque wrench (capable of accurately measuring 18.5 ft-lbs of torque)
- High-temperature anti-seize paste (for spark plug threads)
Step-by-Step Spark Plug Replacement for Your 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor
-
Ensure the Engine is Cold: Safety first! Always wait until your Mercedes C230 Kompressor engine is completely cold before starting any work. Working on a hot engine can cause burns and injuries.
-
Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable: This is a crucial safety step when working on any electrical components in your 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor. Locate the negative battery terminal (usually marked with a ‘-‘ sign). Loosen the nut on the cable clamp and carefully disconnect the negative cable. Be extremely cautious not to drop the nut into the engine bay. If you do, like I did, a flashlight and magnetic pickup tool will be your best friends to retrieve it from tight spots near the battery.

-
Remove the Plastic Engine Cover: The engine cover on your Mercedes C230 Kompressor is usually held in place by friction clips. Carefully pull upwards at each corner of the cover to detach it. Set the engine cover aside in a safe place.
-
Expose the Ignition Coils: With the engine cover removed, you will now see the ignition coils. The 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor M271 engine uses a coil-on-plug ignition system. This means there’s an individual ignition coil directly on top of each spark plug, eliminating the need for spark plug wires and a distributor. Inspect the area around the coils. If you notice any dirt or debris, use compressed air or a soft brush to gently clean the area. Preventing anything from falling into the cylinder head is vital, as contaminants entering the combustion chamber can cause significant engine damage. Fortunately, on my C230 Kompressor, the engine bay under the cover was surprisingly clean.

-
Disconnect the Coil Wiring Harnesses: Each ignition coil has a wiring harness connector attached to it. To disconnect these, locate the small tabs on the connector. Pinch both tabs simultaneously and gently pull the connector away from the coil. Do this for each of the four coils.
-
Remove the Ignition Coils: Each coil on your Mercedes C230 Kompressor is secured by two long bolts with E8 star heads. Using your ¼” ratchet and the E8 star socket, carefully remove these bolts for each coil. It’s worth noting that star sockets (also known as Torx sockets externally) are common on German and Japanese vehicles. If you don’t already own a set, they are a worthwhile investment for working on your Mercedes C230 Kompressor and other similar vehicles. I purchased a set at Autozone for this job.

Access the Spark Plugs: Once the ignition coil is removed, you’ll see the spark plug recessed in the spark plug well.

-
Remove the Old Spark Plugs: Attach your 5/8” spark plug socket to an extension and then to your 3/8” ratchet. Carefully insert the socket into the spark plug well, ensuring it fully engages with the spark plug. Turn the ratchet counter-clockwise to loosen and remove the spark plug. The spark plug socket should grip the plug and allow you to lift it out of the well. Repeat this process for all four spark plugs.

-
Prepare the New Spark Plugs: Take your new Bosch FR6332 spark plugs. Apply a very small amount of high-temperature anti-seize paste to the threads of each new spark plug. This will prevent the plugs from seizing in the cylinder head in the future, making future removal easier. Important: Avoid getting anti-seize compound on the electrode end of the spark plug. While Bosch FR6332 plugs are typically pre-gapped to the correct specification for your Mercedes C230 Kompressor, it’s always a good practice to double-check the gap using a spark plug gap tool and compare it to the specification in your owner’s manual or a reliable repair manual.

-
Install the New Spark Plugs: Place a new spark plug into the spark plug socket and attach it to the extension (but not the ratchet yet). Carefully thread the new spark plug into the spark plug well by hand, turning it clockwise. Starting by hand is crucial to prevent cross-threading, which can severely damage the cylinder head and lead to costly repairs. Continue threading by hand until the spark plug is snug. Once you are certain the plug is correctly threaded and hand-tight, attach your torque wrench to the extension and spark plug socket. Tighten the spark plug to the torque specification of 18.5 ft-lbs. Using a torque wrench is essential to avoid over-tightening or under-tightening the spark plugs, both of which can cause engine problems. Do not overtighten!
-
Reinstall the Ignition Coils: Place the ignition coil back over the new spark plug, ensuring it is fully seated. Reinstall the two E8 star bolts that secure the coil. Tighten these bolts. They don’t require excessive torque; snug is sufficient. I often use a nutdriver to start these and then just a bit of pressure with the ¼” ratchet. A seasoned mechanic once advised me to primarily use a ¼” ratchet for smaller bolts to prevent over-tightening and breakage.
-
Reconnect the Wiring Harnesses: Reconnect the wiring harness connector to each ignition coil, ensuring it clicks into place.
-
Repeat for Remaining Cylinders: Repeat steps 5-12 for the remaining three cylinders to replace all four spark plugs on your 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor. Cylinder number 3 might be slightly more challenging due to limited space for disconnecting and reconnecting the harness. You may need to gently move aside or loosen a nearby harness to gain better access.

-
Final Checks and Reassembly: Double-check that all wiring harnesses are securely connected to the ignition coils and that all coil bolts are tightened. Reinstall the plastic engine cover by pressing it firmly back into place until the clips engage. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten the nut securely.
-
Start Your Engine and Verify: Start your Mercedes C230 Kompressor engine to ensure it runs smoothly. If you encounter any issues like a rough idle or engine misfires, recheck all connections and ensure spark plugs are properly installed. It’s also a good practice to record this spark plug replacement in your vehicle’s service history log, noting the date and mileage. You may need to reset the clock and radio settings after disconnecting the battery. Ensure you have your radio code if required.
-
Clean Up (Optional): While you have the engine cover off, you can use a plastic protectant like Vinylex to clean and shine the plastic engine components for a cleaner engine bay appearance.
